
Volleyball Defeats MAAC Preseason Favorite Canisius in 4 Sets

HAMDEN, CONN. – The Quinnipiac volleyball team defeated the Canisius Golden Griffins 3-1 on Saturday afternoon on Burt Kahn Court. The Bobcats played a strong game at the net recording 18 digs and holding Canisius to a .073 hitting percentage.

SET ONE
Canisius got out to an early 5-0 lead in the set, leading to a Bobcats timeout. Maggie Baker recorded a kill on the next point out of the timeout to get the Bobcats on the board. Canisius would build their lead out to 9-1, but a 4-0 Bobcats run would cut the Canisius lead to 9-5. Canisius would build their lead back up to six points, and it would stay there for the remainder of the middle points of the set. Quinnipiac would win four straight points to cut the Canisius lead to 18-15. The Bobcats would call a timeout with Canisius leading 21-16 in the set. QU would win two straight points to cut their deficit to three, but Canisius would take four of the last five points to take the set 25-19.
SET TWO
The Bobcats took an early 7-5 lead in the set, and they would build on that lead, pushing it to 10-7, forcing a Canisius timeout. Canisius would be forced to call their second timeout of the set with the Bobcats leading 16-10 in the set. Olga Zampati would record a kill to give the Bobcats a 19-11 lead in the set. The Bobcats would lead in the set from start to finish and take the set 25-17.
SET THREE
The third set would begin in a back and forth manner with the score tied at five in the early stages. Quinnipiac would win three of the next four points to take a 9-6 lead in the set, and the Bobcats would continue to build on their lead, pushing it to 13-8. Canisius would call their first timeout of the set with the Bobcats leading 17-13. The Golden Griffins would come out of their timeout and win four of the next five points to cut the Bobcat lead to 18-17, resulting in a Quinnipiac timeout. The Bobcats would come out of their timeout and win two straight points to take a 20-17 lead. Canisius called their final timeout of the set with the Bobcats leading 21-18. Canisius would fight off three set points to cut the Bobcat lead to 24-23, forcing a Bobcats timeout. The Golden Griffins would fight off another set point to tie the set at 24. The Bobcats would fight off a set point of their own to tie the set at 25. They would take the lead 26-25 from a Morgan Sherwin block. And the Bobcats would win the next point to win the set 27-25.
SET FOUR
Canisius would take an early 4-2 lead in the set. Quinnipiac would win two straight points to tie the set at four. QU would win three consecutive points to take an 11-8 lead in the set, forcing a Canisius timeout. Canisius would win three straight points to tie the set at 13. With Quinnipiac leading 16-14, Canisius took their second timeout of the set. Maggie Baker would push the Bobcats lead to three, 20-17. That would begin a 6-0 run from the Bobcats, which gave them the set 25-17, and the match 3-1.
