LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. — The Quinnipiac men's tennis team improved to 5-0 in the MAAC and guaranteed itself a spot in next weekend's conference tournament with a 7-0 win over Rider on Tuesday afternoon.
The shutout levels Quinnipiac's overall record at 8-8 on the season while keeping it unblemished in conference play with two regular season matches still to play. Rider slips to 0-11 overall and 0-6 in the MAAC with the loss.
The Broncs were down to only five players, which gave the Bobcats wins by default at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles. Doubles were still a close battle, as senior Julian Rozenstein and sophomore Patrick Cachapero took a 6-4 win at No. 1 and sophomore Axel Stern and freshman Hielke Moore were pushed past regulation for a 7-5 win at No. 2.
Singles, though, saw the Bobcats assert themselves, as they dropped only 13 games over the five matches. Moore was the most dominant as he took a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5, while Rozenstein continued his impressive run of play with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1. Rozenstein remains undefeated in the MAAC and has won his last three conference singles matches by an aggregate score of 36-5.
Senior Kyle Alper also took a convincing win at No. 2 singles with a 6-2, 6-1 victory, while Cachapero (6-3, 6-1) and Stern (6-4, 6-1) earned straight-set wins at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively.
The Bobcats needed the short workload this afternoon, as they will be right back in action tomorrow to take on Fairfield for a 3 p.m. road match. Quinnipiac will then close out the regular season at home on Saturday against Monmouth in a likely winner-take-all battle for the top seed in the MAAC Tournament, as the defending champion Hawks also come into the week undefeated in MAAC play.
