HAMDEN, Conn. - Freshman forward Odeen Tufto was named one of three finalists for the Eastern College Athletic Conference Men's Hockey Rookie of the Year Award, it was announced today by the league office.
Tufto joins Cornell goaltender Matthew Galajda and Clarkson forward Jack Jacome as the three candidates for the honor, which will be announced next week prior to the start of the league's championship weekend in Lake Placid. The candidates for the ECAC major awards are chosen through a vote of the conference's 12 head coaches.
Quinnipiac's leader in assists (32) and points (41) during his rookie season, Tufto currently leads all freshmen nationally with his 32 assists. He is one of only 20 players in the nation, in any class, who have reached 41 points so far this winter. He has recorded multiple assists in a game 10 times, while his 14 multi-point games lead all freshman in the country as well.
In addition, Tufto is only the 11th freshman in Quinnipiac history to reach 30 points in his rookie season, and only the fourth to reach the 30-assist plateau. In league play, his 20 assists and 25 points rank first among ECAC freshmen.
Tufto's efforts last weekend helped the Bobcats advance through to the ECAC Quarterfinals with a two-game opening-round sweep of local rival Yale. He had a goal and an assist on the first two Bobcat goals in a 4-1 win over the Bulldogs on Saturday, which clinched the series and sent Quinnipiac through to this weekend's quarterfinal round, when they will travel to No. 2 Cornell on Friday-Sunday for a three-game series at Lynah Rink in Ithaca.
