HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac volleyball team hosts its first home matches of the season, after playing their first 15 matches away from Hamden, when it entertains Saint Peter's on Saturday and Rider on Sunday in a pair of 1 p.m. MAAC contests at Burt Kahn Court.
Top Storylines
- Quinnipiac went through a difficult non-conference schedule, which included Washington State and Baylor, which were both ranked just outside the top 25.
- The Bobcats split their first two MAAC contests of the new season, sweeping Manhattan 3-0 on Saturday and falling 3-2 to Iona on Sunday.
- Senior Elizabeth Kloos (Munster, Ind.) was named to the All-Tournament team at the Towson Tiger Invitational on Sept. 9. Kloos had six kills in 12 attempts in a win over Lafayette, and 12 kills in 21 attempts in a four-set loss to Cal State Fullerton. Sophomore Natalie Alechko (Old Tappan, N.J.) earned all-tournament honors at the Washington State Cougar Challenge on Sept. 1 and sophomore Alejandra Rodriguez (Toa Alta, P.R.) earned similar accolades at the Fort Wayne Invitational on Aug. 26.
- Junior Jen Coffey (Merrimack, N.H.) is coming off a big weekend with 30 kills in 58 attempts for a .396 percentage. She had 20 kills at Iona on Sunday, her third career match with 20 or more kills (two shy of her career best set vs. Niagara last year).
- Sophomore libero Alejandra Rodriguez (Toa Alta, P.R.) had her third career match with 20 or more digs against Iona on Sunday.
- Sophomore setter Maria Pansari (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) had 30 assists and set a new career-high wtih 17 digs against Iona on Sunday.
- Junior Kat Miller (Collegeville, Pa.) leads the team with 140 digs and is third with 122 kills. She has six double-doubles on the year, including 10 kills and 16 digs against Iona on Sunday.
- Quinnipiac swept both New Jersey foes last year, sweeping Saint Peter's both times and winning two dramatic matches with Rider, a five-setter in Lawrenceville and a four-setter in its home finale.
- Quinnipiac's 21 wins in 2016 represented an 18-win improvement from the prior season, when it only won three, the biggest single-season turnaround in the nation last year. Notre Dame was second with a 15-game improvement.
- Quinnipiac was picked to finish second in the MAAC preseason poll after ending last year as the third-place finisher in the regular season and the runner-up in the conference tournament. It is the highest the Bobcats have ever been picked in one of their preseason polls at the Division I level.
- Senior middle hitter Elizabeth Kloos (Munster, Ind.) was chosen to the Preseason All-MAAC team in a vote of the league's coaches after hitting .301 as a junior last year, ranking sixth in the conference.
- Junior outside hitter Jen Coffey (Merrimack, N.H.) was a first-team All-MAAC selection last year after leading the Bobcats with 404 kills, tying her for third place on Quinnipiac's single-season Division I list (since 1998). She also tied for eighth in school history in all divisions.
- Sophomore setter Maria Pansari (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) had 1,358 assists as a freshman last year, setting the Quinnipiac school record for all divisions. No Bobcat setter had ever reached 1,000 assists at the Division I level previously. She now has 1,632, on a pace to reach 2,000 by the end of the season.
- Pansari, Alechko and libero Alejandra Rodriguez (Toa Alta, P.R.) were all named to the MAAC All-Rookie team last year.
- Senior Elizabeth Kloos (Munster, Ind.) and junior Jen Coffey (Merrimack, N.H.) are currently tied for fifth place on Quinnipiac's all-time Division I list for career kills with 734 apiece, just one shy of fourth place and 72 away from third (see below chart).
