QU Rugby Opens New Home Field With 42-22 Win Over Army

HAMDEN, Connecticut – The two-time defending national champion Quinnipiac women's rugby team opened its 2017 season with a win, as it defeated Army West Point 42-22 at home in its first ever game at its new field on Quinnipiac's Mount Carmel campus. The Bobcats were led offensively by Mikah Maples (Mowequa, Illinois) who tallied three first-half tries, while senior Ilona Maher (Burlington, Vermont) also had three tries in the match, to go along with three assists.

- Mikah Maples (Mowequa, Illinois) surpassed her total in tries from last year with three against the Black Knights, all in the first half. She scored the first points of the 2017 season for the Bobcats scampering in from over 20 yards out.
- Fifth-year senior Tayler Schussler (Westminster, Maryland) had a first-half try to give the Bobcats a 15-7 lead.
- After falling behind 7-5, Quinnipiac outscored Army 37-3 over a span of 60 minutes to take a 42-10 lead, before the Black Knights ended the drought with just under 10 minutes left.
- The Bobcats improve to 23-3 since the start of the 2015 season, during which span they have won two national titles
- Senior Rebecca Haight (Oconomowec, Wis.) had the first try of the second half for the Bobcats, extending their lead to 30-10 after taking a 25-10 lead at the break.
- Quinnipiac has won seven of its last eight contests against the Black Knights, including last season's national semifinals and the national championship match in 2015.
- The Bobcats defeated Army 32-19 in the season opener last year, after trailing 19-12 at the half.
