Former ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Year Signs With Club that Drafted Her in Fifth Round of 2016 NWHL Draft
BROOKLYN, New York – Quinnipiac women's ice hockey senior goaltender Sydney Rossman (Excelsior, Minnesota), a 2016 NWHL Fifth Round draft pick of the Connecticut Whale, signed a one-year contract with the club on Monday, March 15, 2017.
"It was a really cool thing to get the contract offer to join the Whale and the NWHL," said Rossman, in a release penned by the NWHL. "I was hoping to play for the Whale this upcoming season, but it wasn't a reality until I got that email. It's really great to continue my hockey career at a high level.
"Since I have teammates and friends on the four teams, I was at a lot of NWHL games in the last two years and was really impressed. The NWHL is all about the opportunity for women in pro sports. I'm excited to get a chance to be part of the league and help build its reputation in this early phase. I'm hoping that a lot of people come out in see us starting in October. I believe this season can have a huge impact on the future of the NWHL, and from here the league will grow stronger."
A highly-touted recruit out of Minnetonka High School in Minnesota, Rossman flourished in her four-year career as a Bobcat, highlighted by 2015-16 season that saw her earn ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Year honors as well as ECAC Hockey Tournament Most Outstanding Player, All-ECAC Hockey First Team, New England All-Star and All-USCHO Third Team. In that 2015-16 campaign, she put together the best single-season by a Quinnipiac goaltender in program history setting a record for wins (30) and goals-against average (0.90) while matching the record with 16 shutouts and owning a .949 save percentage (second-best ever at Quinnipiac). Her success on the ice led the Bobcats to their first-ever ECAC Tournament and Regular Season Championship while the team advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time.
For her career, Rossman amassed a career mark of 53-13-11 (.757 win percentage) while sporting a 1.16 GAA, .938 save percentage, 1409 saves and 26 shutouts in 84 games played (78 starts, 4817 minutes). Her 26 shutouts, 1.16 GAA and .938 career save percentage all rank first all-time at Quinnipiac while she sits second in wins (53) and sixth in saves.
Drafted in the fifth round of the 2016 NWHL Draft, Rossman becomes the ninth Quinnipiac alum to sign a professional contract in the NWHL. She joins former teammates Nicole Connery (Whale), Nicole Kosta (Whale), Cydney Roesler (Whale), Kelly Babstock (Whale), Elena Orlando (Whale), Morgan Fritz-Ward (New York Riveters) and Shiann Darkangelo (Buffalo Beauts) – all of which played in the NWHL in 2016-17 – while Chelsea Laden played for the Whale and Riveters in 2015-16.
Rossman is set to graduate Quinnipiac on Saturday, May 20th with a degree in marketing. In addition to playing and coaching at Pro Crease Goaltending with Quinnipiac's men's ice hockey goaltending coach Jared Waimon, Rossman will pursue an MBA at Quinnipiac.
