POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - Quinnipiac men's tennis senior Kei Ezaka (Ojai, California) won the 138th match of his career, setting the program-record for career wins in the Bobcats 4-3 loss against MAAC foe Marist.
The loss snaps a three-game winning streak against conference foes and drops Quinnipiac's record to 8-8 on the season (3-1 MAAC), while Marist improves to 10-2 (2-0 MAAC).
Ezaka's 138th win moved him past John Hughes' previous record of 137 wins. Ezaka now has 68 singles wins, which is second all-time and 69 doubles wins, which is third all-time in program history.
The day began in with the No. 1 doubles match, where Freddie Zaretsky (Fair Lawn, New Jersey) and Julian Rozenstein (Marlboro, New Jersey) defeated Rudolf Kurz and Christopher Gladden, 6-3. Javier Restrepo and Gianlucca Massa defeated the Bobcat duo of Austin Yannone (Severna Park, Maryland) and Axel Stern (Tustin, California), 6-3 in the No. 2 doubles match. It was up to Kyle Alper (Dix Hills, New York) and Ezaka to secure the doubles point for Quinnipiac, and they were successful, defeating Justin Chanthalangsy and Dylan Fletcher, 6-2 to give Quinnipiac a 1-0 lead.
Marist tied the score at 1-1 after Chanthalangsy defeated Patrick Cachapero (Loma Linda, California) in the No. 4 singles match in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-3. Alper gave Quinnipiac the lead again after he defeated Fletcher in straight sets in the No. 6 spot, 6-2 and 6-4.
Gladden knotted the match at 2-2 after he defeated Stern in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-3. Rozenstein gave Quinnipiac a 3-2 lead after he defeated Massa in straight sets, 6-4 and 7-5. Zaretsky then took the court against Kurz in the No. 2 singles match and took the first set, 6-4. However, Kurz battled back and took the final two sets 6-3 and 6-2, setting the table for a winner takes all No. 1 match.
Ezaka then took the court against Restrepo in an intense battle that came down to the last point. Ezaka dropped the first set 4-6 but took the second 6-2. The two battled hard against each other in the final set, with Restrepo narrowly edging Ezaka, 7-6 (7).
The Bobcats will be back in action on Sunday, April 9, when Quinnipiac welcomes Siena to Hamden for Senior Day, with festivities set to begin at 10:30 a.m. and the match set to start at 2 p.m.
