NEW HAVEN, Connecticut - The Quinnipiac women's tennis team lost in a tough matchup on the road, falling to in-state rival Yale, 7-0 at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center in New Haven on Sunday afternoon.
With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 4-5 (3-0 MAAC), while Yale improves to 1-7 on the season.
The day began with the No. 3 doubles match where the duo of Proyfon Lohaphaisan (Santa Clarita, California) and Kelsi Oliphant (Calgary, Alberta) took on Amy Yang and Valerie Shklover, falling to the Yale duo, 6-1. Layla Rodriguez (Rancho Santa Margarita, California) and Sitilia Rencheli (Sarasota, Florida) fell in the No. 2 doubles match against Carol Finke and Opala Dhingra, 6-0, giving Yale the doubles point. Doubles play concluded with a hard-fought match between reigning MAAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week, Rachel Horton (Stamford, Connecticut) and Sydney Young (Austin, Texas) against Yale's Caroline Lynch and Elizabeth Zordani. The match went back-and-forth, before the Bulldogs narrowly pulled away to win, 7-5.
Quinnipiac could not turn things around in singles play, dropping six straight matches in the process. Singles play began with the No. 4 draw, where Young fell to Zordani in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-2. The No. 5 singles match followed, where Rodriguez lost to Lynch in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-4. Yale clinched the win in the No. 2 draw as Horton fell to Yang in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-4.
In the No. 6 draw, Lohaphaisan battled hard against Dhingra, but could not come out on top as she fell in straight sets as well, 6-3 and 6-4. In the No. 3 draw, Jennifer Lu (Cypress, California) was able to steal a set from Shklover. Shklover won the first set, 6-2, but Lu bounced back to take the second set, 6-4. However, Shklover closed the match with a strong third set to beat Lu, 6-1. In the final match of the day, Rencheli and Finke battled in what was the match of the day. Finke took the first set, 6-3, but Rencheli came back to take the second set, 6-4. Rencheli came up just short of the complete comeback as she fell, 6-4, the final set.
Quinnipiac will be back in action on Saturday, March 4, as the team travels to West Point, New York to take on Army at 9 a.m.
