Lee Wins Her Fourth Straight 60m Hurdles Event While Christina Barbaro (Pictured Above) Placed 9th With a PR in the 500m
BOSTON, Massachusetts – The Quinnipiac women's indoor track and field team completed the Terrier Invite with a solid all-around effort from several Bobcats combined with yet another standout performance from junior Jessica Lee (Montgomery, New Jersey).
Coming into the competition fresh off a blistering program record time of 8.36 seconds that has her tied for the 33rd-fastest 60m hurdles time in the nation, Lee dominated the competition with her fourth straight victory to start the season. Armed with six 60m hurdles titles heading into her junior campaign, Lee has broken through time and time again in 2016-17 as she is now a perfect four-for-four in claiming first place in her signature event. Competing against a season high field of 78 hurdlers, Lee crossed the line in 8.51 seconds to best the Terrier Invite field for the first time in her career (previous high of third place in 2016).
As Lee continued to shine, Quinnipiac's depth proved their talent headlined by a pair of career high performances in the 500m from junior Christina Barbaro (Elk Township, New Jersey – pictured above) and senior Cori Reid (Old Saybrook, Connecticut). Barbaro picked up a huge ninth place finish while crossing the line with a personal-best time of 1:17.22. Now the owner of the third-fastest 500m time in program history, Barbaro's year-to-year improvement is significant as she placed 43rd in the same event at the 2016 Terrier Invite. Reid, meanwhile, showed quite similar progression from 2016 as Reid moved up considerably from her 42nd place finish all the way to 12th in the 500m as she crossed the line in a personal-best 1:17.80.
Competing for the first time in a Bobcat uniform, Mikah Maples (Mowequa, Illinois) made history as she threw a program record of 12.23m in the shot put to take 19th place. A two-sport athlete at Quinnipiac competing in the fall for the two-time national champion women's rugby program, Maples made quite the statement in her debut as she bested the previous program record 12.09m.
Several more Bobcats posted personal-bests on the day including freshman Melissa Solomon (Dorchester, Massachusetts) in both the 200m (25.89 seconds, 49th) and 400m (58.72, 34th). Racing in just her first season, Solomon has already jumped up to the fifth-fastest 400m time in program history while her 200m performance sends her into the Top 10 all-time record list at Quinnipiac.
The sprint events saw a pair of impressive outings from Lee in the 200m as she continued yet another strong day with her 15th place finish and time of 24.99 racing against a season high field of 158 sprinters. Francine Jacque (Port-au-Prince, Haiti) ran her first sub-eight second 60m dash time of the season as she posted a time of 7.99 seconds to place 21st out of 66. Jacque later added a 37th place finish in the 200m with a time of 25.63.
A pair of veterans showed well in the 800m as graduate student Medinah Nabadduka (Windsor, Connecticut) and Reid placed 36th and 44th, respectively, out of 129 competitors. Nabadduka clocked in at 2:16.08 while Reid came through with a time of 2:17.48.
Competing in her first career 1000m event, Kaitlyn Hebert (Glastonbury, Connecticut) put together a solid showing as she crossed the line in 3:03.31 to claim 32nd place out of 57 runners in the event.
Later in the field events, Carly Timpson (Narragansett, Rhode Island) coupled with Maples' strong debut and put together a seventh place showing out of 44 as she tossed 16.16m in the weight throw.
A busy weekend looms ahead for the Bobcats as the team will split to compete in both the Giegengack Invitational and Armory Track Invite from Feb. 3-4.
