EAST LANSING, Michigan - The Quinnipiac University field hockey team lost to Michigan State, 4-1, in a non-conference game played at Ralph Young Field in East Lansing, Michigan. With the loss, Quinnipiac drops to 0-4 on the season while Michigan State improves to 3-1.
Quinnipiac senior captain Savanna Reilly (Hamden, Connecticut) scored her team-leading third goal of the season early in the first half to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead. On the play, Angie King (South Windsor, Connecticut) was given the ball in front of the Bobcats' bench before she threw it into the circle. Freshman Ines Ruiz Martines (Madrid, Spain) was there to recieve it, tipping it past a Michigan State defender to Reilly who batted it past MSU goalkeeper Katie Miller to give Quinnipiac an early lead.
The goal gives Reilly a three-game goal-scoring streak while Ruiz Martinez picks up her first career point on the assist. Danielle Allan was the last Bobcat to score in three consecutive games, accomplishing the feat in 2014. Of Quinnipiac's four goals this season, Reilly has had a hand in all four - scoring three and assisting on another.
For Michigan State, Sophie Macadre tied the game midway through the first half before giving the Spartans the lead three minutes with her third goal of the season. Michigan State leading scorer Kendal Anderson picked up the assist on Macadre's second goal. Anderson scored her team-best seventh goal of the year late in the second half while Kristin Matula also converted for Michigan State.
In goal, Quinnipiac freshman Olivia Golini (York, Maine) stopped five of Michigan State's nine shots on goal while sophomore Hannah Teicher ()Bethesda, Maryland) stopped the only two shots she faced in the final nine minutes of regulation in her first career appearance.
The Bobcats return to action on Friday, Sept. 9 when they travel to Burlington, Vermont to face the University of Vermont before hosting Lafayette on Sunday, Sept. 11 at Yale University's Johnson Field in New Haven, Conn.
