HAMDEN, Connecticut – Defending National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA) Champion Quinnipiac women's rugby was ranked second in the first Division I Women's Rugby national rankings of the 2016 season, as announced by the website on Wednesday, Sept. 14.
TheRugbyBreakdown.com releases polls during each spring and fall season that tracks the best teams in the country and is considered one of the most widely read women's rugby websites in the nation. In order to be included in the "Division I Fall Top 20" ranking a program must be a DI team competing toward the USA Rugby fall championship/National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA), a Division I Elite teams, or an independent team with a highly competitive fall schedule. Quinnipiac Bobcats ranked the highest out of the members of the NIRA included in the ranking.
"The first polls of the year are always interesting because anything is up for grabs this early," stated Head Coach Becky Carlson. "We expect to see some exciting competition within NIRA and this is the highest ranking any rugby media outlet has identified for QU to date so it's up to our program to show we deserve the spot."
The Bobcats are off to a 2-0 start that includes wins against No. 3 Army West Point, 32-19 in the 2016 season opener, as well as a 44-0 win against No. 11 American International College.
Quinnipiac looks to build upon this success as they travel to meet No. 9 Norwich University this upcoming Saturday, Sept. 17 at 11:00AM in Northfield, Vermont.
