Caron Clocks in at 2:12.58 to Break a Nine-Year-Old Program Record in the 800m
NEW HAVEN, Connecticut – In a very fast-paced final day of the New England Championships, the Quinnipiac women's outdoor track and field team finished in 22nd place out of 75 teams after the two-day meet's completion held on the campus of Southern Connecticut State. The Bobcats combined to score 12 team points while Alyson Caron (Andover, New Jersey) was certainly the star of the day, running a program record in her signature 800m event.
Caron's obliterated the program record on Saturday as she earned a sixth place finish out of 31 runners with her time of 2:12.58. Caron's landmark achievement unseats Erin O'Connell's previous program record of 2:13.38 which had stood since May 25, 2007 (nearly nine years). The junior put together the best race of her career as her previous personal-best of 2:14.60 ranked fifth all-time at Quinnipiac and was over two seconds slower than the time she posted on Saturday.
Not to be forgotten in the 800m was Cori Reid (Old Saybrook, Connecticut) who pushed Caron the whole way before placing right behind her junior classmate in seventh place with a time of 2:12.84. Reid's time also bested the previous program record set nearly nine years ago while her time now ranks second all-time to Caron's 2:12.58. Coming into the 2016 outdoor season with a personal-best of 2:16.56, Reid has improved dramatically and shaved nearly four seconds off her times in the 800m.
Quinnipiac also managed to score three points in the 4x800m relay as the Bobcats combined for a sixth place finish out of 14 teams. Caron and Reid teamed up with Medinah Nabadduka (Windsor, Connecticut) and Darby Ginley (Warwick, New York) to cross the line in 9:28.27.
Other performances on the day for the Bobcats included Nabadduka (2:18.19) and Ginley (2:23.18) in the 800m, Leah Pfrommer (Killingworth, Connecticut) in the triple jump (10.25m), Mackenzie Merkel (Hillsdale, New Jersey) in the shot put (11.64m) and discus throw (37.61m).
