The Bobcats Capture Two Individual Event Titles on the Evening
WACO, Texas – The Quinnipiac University acrobatics and tumbling team captured two Individual Event Titles on Saturday night at the National Collegiate Acrobatics & Tumbling Association (NCATA) National Championships while two Bobcats earned postseason recognition. Head coach Mary Ann Powers was named the 2016 NCATA Coach of the Year while junior Allee Tallman (Farmington, New York) took home All-American honors. The Bobcats claimed both the Acro Six-Element championship and the Synchronized Toss title during the individual event competition.
Powers earned Coach of the Year honors for the first time in her career after leading Quinnipiac to a 6-2 overall record and a number three-seed in the tournament. The Bobcats' 2016 regular season record marks the best in program history. QU's previous best came during the 2013-14 season, when Quinnipiac finished 5-2 before going 1-1 at the NCATA Championships. In the previous five years of the NCATA tournament, Powers has led her squad to one national championship berth and two appearances in the semifinals.
Tallman was one of 12 student-athletes to be named to the 2016 NCATA All-American Team. The junior base earned the honor for the first time in her career after competing in 13 different heats throughout the season. Tallman participated in three of the four heats in the Compulsory, two heats in each of the Acro, Pyramid and Toss events, the Team routine and three separate Tumbling heats. The junior helped her team score four perfect 10's in four different heats on the year. Against Gannon, Tallman and the Bobcats produced perfect scores in the Compulsory Toss heat and in the Flip and Release heats of the Pyramid round. Tallman also helped lead Quinnipiac to a 10 against Baylor in the Compulsory Pyramid heat.
For the first time in program history, the Bobcats claimed the Acro Six-Element and Synchronized Toss Championships. In the Six-Element, the four-seeded Quinnipiac team of Tallman, Abby Ziser (Pompton Plains, New Jersey) and Noelle Brasier (Simi Valley, California) captured the individual title with a 9.80.
The Bobcats then captured the Synchronized Toss as the number two-seed. Tallman, Brasier, Taylor Johnson (Foxboro, Massachusetts), Catherine Toma (Hackettstown, New Jersey), Jenna Capristo (Wolcott, Connecticut), Kelsey Rule (Kendall Park, New Jersey), Kayla McCormack (Hanson, Massachusetts), Jordan Cavallaro (Bloomingdale, New Jersey), Stephanie Amaral (Stoughton, Massachusetts) and Alexandra Williams (Poughkeepsie, New York) all combined efforts to take home the Bobcats' second championship with a 9.50.
Quinnipiac is back in action tomorrow, Sunday, April 17 for an NCATA Quarterfinal matchup against Fairmont State. Earlier this season, the Bobcats defeated the Falcons in a tri-meet, 272.545-267.495. The meet is slated to begin at 1 p.m. ET from Baylor University in Waco, Texas.
