BRONX, New York – The Quinnipiac women's cross country team put an exclamation point on another tremendous season as the Bobcats earned a 14th place finish at the 2016 NCAA Northeast Regionals held at Van Cortlandt Park on Friday. The 14th place result is Quinnipiac's best finish at the NCAA Regionals since placing 13th back in 2009.
Closing out her Quinnipiac career with one more tremendous performance was senior Niamh Ashe (East Islip, New York) as one of the most decorated runners in program history put together a 42nd place finish in her final appearance in the blue and gold. Running the 6k event in 21:31.90, Ashe managed a first place finish on the team in a staggering 18 out of her 19 career appearances. She will graduate as just the second Bobcat in program history to accumulate four All-Conference honors.
Not far behind the senior standout Ashe was junior Emily Wolff (Highlands Ranch, Colorado) as the Bobcat pack showed great depth with her 64th place result. Running in a crowded field of 254 competitors, credit Wolff's ability to stave off the pressure and cross the line in 21:55.10. Wolff continues to show very well throughout her career at the NCAA Regional as she was coming off a 35th place finish (first on the team) from the 2015 Northeast Regional event.
Classmate Kaleigh Roberts (Higganum, Connecticut) was not far behind Wolff as she picked up a 72nd place finish while crossing the line in 21:58.90. The three-time All-MAAC performer Roberts continues to improve year-in and year-out in her career at the NCAA Regional events. After placing 129th overall in her freshman season, Roberts elevated to 94th place in 2015 and now continues to move up with her 72nd place finish on the day.
The 2016 MAAC Rookie of the Year and All-MAAC performer Kaitlin Bakas (South Windsor, Connecticut) closed out her successful rookie campaign with her 110th place finish, crossing the line in 22:23.20. After becoming just the third freshman in program history to take home Rookie of the Year honors, Bakas hopes to build off a successful 2016 campaign where she established herself as one of the top runners in the conference.
Rounding out the scoring on the day for the Bobcats was junior Katey Veron (Franklin Square, New York) who picked up a 144th place finish with a time of 22:49. Veron's second career appearance in the NCAA Regionals saw her move up three spots from her 147th place finish in last year's Northeast Regional event.
Quinnipiac concludes another successful season that saw the Bobcats claim a second place finish at the MAAC Championships held in Disney, marking the 13th straight season in which Quinnipiac finished no worse than second in a conference championship meet. Head coach Carolyn Martin will have to say goodbye to Ashe, one of the most decorated runners in program history, but she can take solace in the return of three All-MAAC runners and 18 total letterwinners from this season.
