Adily Martucci and Carly Fabbri Named Captains Second Straight Season, Morgan Manz Joins Captain Ranks for First Time in Her Career
HAMDEN, Connecticut – As voted on by the players and staff members of the Quinnipiac women's basketball team, three captains have been announced for the upcoming 2016-17 season. Redshirt senior Adily Martucci (Waterford, Conn.), junior Carly Fabbri (Stratford, Conn.) and senior Morgan Manz (Southbury, Conn.) will lead the Bobcats as they look to advance to a fifth straight conference championship game and repeat the MAAC Championship season from 2014-15.
"Leadership is about responsibility," said Quinnipiac head coach Tricia Fabbri. "Morgan, Adily and Carly have been recognized by their teammates, coaches and staff personnel. They each bring unique leadership characteristics and as a whole will serve this team well for this season."
Quinnipiac women's basketball's announcement places Martucci and Fabbri into an official leadership title for the second consecutive season. Manz becomes a team captain for the first time in her career. The three-player group of captains is the second-largest in head coach Tricia Fabbri's 22-year coaching career as the four-player group from last season (Martucci, Manz, Maria Napolitano and Katie Carroll) ranked as the most in program history.
Martucci combined with Napolitano in 2015-16 to make for a dangerous one-two punch in the backcourt. She posted career highs across the board as a redshirt junior last season, averaging 7.9 points, 2.5 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.2 steals in 23.3 minutes per game. A valued two-way player, Martucci scored at least two points in all 33 games in which she appearance last season while she often times received the defensive shutdown responsibilities on opposing team's best offensive player. She led the Bobcat backcourt in shooting percentage (36.3) in 2015-16 while she posted one of her best games of the season going for 18 points (7-10 FG, 3-4 3FG) in the WNIT First Round win over Maine.
A distinct vocal presence on the squad since joining the team as a freshman in 2014-15, Fabbri comes into her junior season after breaking out as a sophomore in 2015-16. Limited to 75 minutes playing behind one of the nation's premier guard in Gillian Abshire as a rookie, Fabbri vaulted into a starting role while averaging 25.2 minutes per game which ranked second on the team last season. Averaging 6.3 points, 2.6 assists and 2.5 rebounds per game, Fabbri drastically improved her three-point percentage (36.4) which tied for sixth in the MAAC. Her 2.23 assist/turnover ratio as the team's point guard steadied the offensive attack which led the MAAC in scoring (67.5 PPG) last season.
An assassin from three-point range, Manz posted an incredible 2015-16 in which she averaged 6.5 points and 3.5 rebounds in 19.2 minutes per game while shooting an impressive 45.1 percent from long range. Her 45.1 three-point percentage led the MAAC last season and ranked seventh-best in the nation. A key player in the Bobcats' win streak last season, Manz shot a team-best 54.1 percent overall and 54.3 percent from three during the 19-game unbeaten streak in 2015-16.
Quinnipiac's 2016-17 season opens on Friday, November 11 at 2 PM against fellow mid-major power Florida Gulf Coast at the TD Bank Sports Center.
