FORT MYERS, Florida - The Quinnipiac University softball team lost to Boston University, 11-2, and FGCU, 5-0, at the FGCU/Four Points by Sheraton Spring Break Classic hosted by FGCU in Fort Myers, Florida. Quinnipiac drops to 1-7 on the season while Boston University improves to 1-13 and FGCU goes to 13-11 on the year.
Quinnipiac senior Nikki Barba (San Diego, California) collected her first four-hit game of her career, while also pushing her team-leading hit total to nine for the season. Barba is currently second on the Bobcats' roster with a .391 average (9-for-23). Molly Jarrett (Northport, New York) pushed her team-leading hitting streak to six games with a single in the first game, but was held hitless against FGCU. Jarrett leads the team in average (.400, 6-for-15), slugging percentage (.600) and on-base percentage (.526).
In the first game, Quinnipiac clawed its way out of a 3-0 deficit after Boston University scored three times in the first inning. In the bottom of the second, Molly Jarrett (Northport, New York) drew a one-out walk before moving to second on a passed ball. Freshman Casey Herzog (Wappingers Falls, New York) then doubled to right field to plate Jarrett and put Quinnipiac on the board, 3-1. Herzog was 2-for-3 in the game for the Bobcats in the game.
In the third inning, Keilani Finley (Alameda, California) led off the inning with a solo home run down the left field line to pull Quinnipiac within a run, 3-2. The homer was Finley's first of the season and second of her career.
Herzog was pulling double duty in the Bobcats first game of the day as she also got the start on the mound for Quinnipiac. Herzog settled in after the first inning and pitched three scoreless innings. In the fifth, the Terriers finally got to the first year Bobcat, plating four runs before Herzog was lifted in favor of Syndey Robey (Glenmoore, Pennsylvania). Robey was tagged for four runs in two innings, with only two of which were earned.
In the second game, FGCU struck for three runs in the first with a two-run single by Bri McGuire leading the way in the inning. FGCU also scored in the fifth and sixth to give FGCU a 5-0 lead. For Quinnipiac, Hannah Lindsley (Narragansett, Rhode Island) went the distance on the mound, giving up five runs – only two of which were earned – on six hits over six innings.
Quinnipiac will face Boston University at 9 a.m. and LIU Brooklyn at 11:15 a.m. on Sunday, Mar. 8.
