DELAND, Fla. – The Quinnipiac women's golf team captured its first victory of the season on Friday afternoon, as the Bobcats defeated Fairfield and Delaware State in a tri-match at Victoria Hills Golf Course in Deland, Florida. Sophomore Nicole Scola (Westerly, Rhode Island) was the best golfer in the field, taking home her second career individual victory.
Trailing Delaware State by three strokes after Day One, Quinnipiac shaved seven strokes off its Day Two total to finish 13 strokes better than the Hornets. DSU finished second with a score of 650 (+74) and Fairfield followed with a score of 654 (+78).
"It was a great day of competition," said head coach John O'Connor. "Nicole Scola came through as she always does with a great 74; Estefania continues to improve, I'm very proud of her progress; and Taylor was tremendous with a 77. We look forward to some more practice and getting back on the course at Georgetown."
Scola paced Quinnipiac on Friday, posting the low-round of the tournament with a 74. She scored a 36 on the front and mustered a 38 on the back – going par, par, par, and birdie to finish out the round. Scola picked up her second career victory after winning the Quinnipiac Classic with a two-day total of 146 back in October.
Freshman Estefania Morales (Caracas, Venezuela) fired a 39 on the back nine to salvage a second day total of 82. Morales, who recorded a personal best of 76 on the first day, totaled a 158 which was good enough for a two-way tie for third individually.
Taylor Lambrou (Baldwin, New York) made the biggest improvement from the first day to the second day, securing a 77 on Friday – a personal best for the junior. Her two-day total of 161 put her in sixth place individually for the tournament.
Sophomore Emily Ribbins (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) and junior Jenn Whaley (Farmington, Connecticut) rounded out the group with totals of 164 and 170, respectively. Ribbins tied for eighth overall and Whaley tied for 12th.
Scola led the field in par-4 scoring and most birdies as she scored better than par on five holes. Morales had three birdies and Lambrou had a pair through 36 holes. Morales had the second most pars of any player while finishing third in par-5 scoring and fourth in par-4 scoring.
Delaware State's tandem of Elaine Aisha Peete (157) and Suchada Anusuriya 158) finished second and tied for third overall. Fairfield was led by Emma Ritzman's total of 159.
The Bobcats enjoy a few weeks off before their next tournament. On Tuesday, March 30 and Wednesday, March 31, Quinnipiac will compete in the Georgetown Invitational at the Four Streams Country Club in Beallsville, Maryland.
