HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac acrobatics and tumbling head coach Mary Ann Powers has announced that seniors Kayla McCormack, Taylor Johnson and Demitra Germanakos will serve as tri-captains for the 2016 season.
"I feel like I have a great balance of various leadership dynamics on the team this year between these three young women. Kayla is extremely vocal and carries herself with a demeanor that commands respect while Taylor is a silent warrior and is the kid that will go up to a freshman and make them believe that she will become something," said Powers. "Taylor is self-motivated and believes anything is possible. Demi is so passionate about the sport but also about the dynamics that a team creates. Her enthusiasm, passion and energy is evident in practices and makes her a guiding force in creating what she wants as a captain of this team."
McCormack (Hanson, Massachusetts) has been a member of the team since first coming to Quinnipiac as a freshman. A base out of Whitman Hanson High School, the senior currently majors in criminal justice.
"My favorite and most rewarding part about being an athlete is motivating my teammates to reach their utmost potential and seeing them succeed. I am dedicated to being the greatest example I can for my teammates as well as for the young, female athletes who aspire to pursue this sport," said McCormack. "With our team dynamic, chemistry and dedication, I am confident that this team will make historic advances for this university and this sport and I am extremely honored that I have been chosen as one of the captains."
Last season as a junior, Johnson (Foxboro, Massachusetts) was named to the All-American Team at the NCATA National Championships. She finished the season 7-1 in the Open Pass with a season-high score of 9.85. A marketing major, Johnson has also been with the squad since joining as a freshman.
"Being selected as captain this year is a surreal feeling. I'm finally able to give back to my team and be a leader, not only for my teammates, but for this growing sport," said Johnson. "I am beyond excited to share this experience with women that share the same passion for the sport as I do."
Germanakos (Massapequa, New York) enters her fourth season as a base on the team, joining the Bobcats out of Plainedge High School. The senior currently majors in sociology and is in the Master's program for secondary education.
"This past summer, I tore my Achilles' tendon while tumbling at a local gym. Heading into senior year, I decided that my skills alone do not define me as an athlete. I've committed myself to constantly motivating my teammates in any way possible," said Germanakos. "Due to the constant support from my teammates, I am getting closer to a full recovery every day. This sport is my passion, this team is my family, and I'm so honored to be chosen as a captain."
The Bobcats open up the 2016 regular season in Hamden at the TD Bank Sports Center on February, 14. Quinnipiac will welcome the Baylor Bears for a 1 p.m. matchup. Last season, the Bobcats fell to the Bears in Waco, Texas, 253.59-262.405.
