Quinnipiac
HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac men's basketball team concludes its 2015-16 non-conference schedule when it travels to Bangor, Maine to face the University of Maine Black Bears at the Cross Insurance Center on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m.
Quinnipiac enters the contest at 4-6 on the year and will look to sharpen back up after an eight-day layoff before getting back to MAAC play this weekend with home games against Iona on Saturday (2 p;m., SNY) and against Rider on Monday (7 p.m.). The Bobcats were last in action on the West Coast on Dec. 21, when they fell 82-61 to Pac-12 foe Oregon State after a closely-contested first half.
One of the bright spots for the Bobcats against Oregon State was the play of junior forward Donovan Smith (Chicago, Ill. - pictured), who had his first career double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while shooting 7-14 against a Pac-12 frontline. Smith has picked up his play of late with 13.2 points over his last five games, since an injury to starting forward Chaise Daniels (Meriden, Conn.) moved him into the starting lineup, scoring in double figures in four of those five contests.
Senior guard Giovanni McLean (Bronx, N.Y.) continues to lead the Bobcats in scoring at 15.8 points per game, although he was held below double figures at Oregon State (nine points) for the first time in his brief Quinnipiac career. McLean has set a new career high three times in the month of December, culminating with 24 points against Boston University on Dec. 13.
Quinnipiac holds a 5-2 lead in the series with Maine, all of which have come since Head Coach Tom Moore took over in 2007-08. The last time the Bobcats visited Maine, they came away with a 102-61 win in the 2013-14 season, which is the largest margin of victory that the program has ever had against a Division I opponent. A year ago, Quinnipiac earned an 81-64 home win over Maine, while the last Black Bear win in the series came in 2012-13 at the TD Bank Sports Center.
Quinnipiac's back-to-back games at Oregon State and at Maine are a bit of a geographic quirk. Corvallis, Oregon and Orono, Maine are separated by 3,337.7 miles (by car) and would take 50 hours to drive, according to Google Maps. making it the longest drive between two Division I schools in the continental United States.
