HAMDEN, Conn. - Sophomore Mason Johnson (Olympia, Washington) earned Most Valuable Player honors on Sunday for her outstanding play in the NCWVRA Tournament as announced by the selection committe.
In the championship game, Johnson tied the team lead with two assists. The Washington native assisted on back-to-back scores for the Bobcats as they turned a two point deficit into a five point lead in the opening minutes of the second half. Her first assist came when she dished to Karee Helgerson (Portland, Oregon) in the middle of the field who took it in just a couple yards out for the score. In the second half, Johnson scooped up a loose ball and found Raechel Stimson (Cameron Park, California) who able to barrel in through the Army defense for the try.
"Mason has been incredible all year but today given the conditions you always hope your scrum half can hold up with solid play and smart decisions. Mason did that and so much more and it makes it even more amazing that the NCWVRA coaches noticed it enough to name Mason MVP. Couldn't be prouder, " said head coach Becky Carlson.
In the first round matchup at home against West Chester, Johnson recorded two assists and a try to close out the game.
