HAMDEN, Connecticut – The Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team continues to rank among the top teams in the country as the Bobcats were ranked No. 7 in the latest USCHO.com Division I Women's Poll, as released on Monday, Nov. 2.
In the poll, the Bobcats received 53 points as they have now been ranked in the top 10 for 51 consecutive weeks, dating back to the beginning of the 2013-14 season.
In another ranking system, the Pairwise Rankings, the Bobcats are ranked No. 8 as of the completion of all women's ice hockey games through Nov. 1. The USCHO.com Pairwise Ranking attempts to mimic the method used by the NCAA Selection Committee to determine participants for the NCAA Division I women's hockey tournament.
This past weekend, the Bobcats went 1-1-0 in the first ECAC Hockey weekend of the season with a 4-0 shutout of Brown and a 4-3 loss to Yale. Overall, the Bobcats outshot the Bears and Bulldogs by a combined 63-12, and in the shutout of Brown, outshot the Bears 37-3. The three shots on goal allowed are a new program record for fewest shots on goal allowed in a game, breaking last season's record of four shots on goal allowed against Union.
Once again, Taylar Cianfarano (Oswego, New York) led the Bobcats in scoring with two goals and two assists for four points. With two goals on Oct. 30 at Brown, Cianfarano tied Kelly Babstock's program record of five consecutive games with a goal. On Oct. 31 at Yale, Cianfarano tallied two assists to extend her games with multiple points streak to four games and her point streak to seven games.
Melissa Samoskevich (Sandy Hook, Connecticut) continued her torrid start to her career with three more points after netting one goal and assisting two more. Samoskevich picked up a goal and assist at Brown to give her three straight games with multiple points while her assist on Saturday extended her point streak to seven games to start her career. Samoskevich needs one point against Colgate on Nov. 6 to tie Kelly Babstock's program record of eight straight games with a point, which she did twice in her freshman season.
Emma Woods (Burford, Ontario) was also spectacular for the Bobcats, scoring a goal and assisting three to pick up four points in the first conference weekend of the year. Woods picked up a pair of multi-point games this weekend for the Bobcats as she tallied her fourth multi-point game of the season.
From the blue line, Cydney Roesler (Stittsville, Ontario) was solid in picking up a goal and an assist, including an absolute rocket for a power play goal against Yale on Oct. 31. Roesler has now picked up a point in six consecutive games, one game shy of tying Regan Boulton's program record of consecutive games with a point by a defenseman of seven.
In the poll this week, there was a lot of movement through the top ten with Minnesota dropping out of the No. 1 spot with its first loss of the weekend. Wisconsin edged out Minnesota, 8-7 in first place votes, to claim the top spot while the Eagles are ranked No. 2. Minnesota dropped to No. 3 while Clarkson stayed put at No. 4 despite a pair of ties. North Dakota and Quinnipiac switched spots at No. 5 and 7 with North Dakota moving into the top five. Bemidji State remained ranked at No. 6 with the Bobcats falling to No. 7. Northeastern and Harvard flip-flopped spots, with the Huskies moving up to No. 8 and the Crimson falling to No. 9. Princeton cracked the top 10 for the first time this season with Dartmouth dropping out. In total, the Bobcats have seven teams ranked or receiving votes in the USCHO.com Poll.
The Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team returns to action next weekend as they return home to host the Colgate Raiders on Friday, Nov. 6 at 7 P.M. and the Cornell Big Red on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 4 P.M. Saturday's game will be the Bobcats second annual DIFD Game, where they will raise money and awareness for mental health through the Do It For Daron foundation. Following Saturday's game will also be the first "Skate with the Bobcats" of the season at High Point Solutions Arena.
