Freshman Scored 16 in Loss at Army on Sunday
EDISON, New Jersey – Quinnipiac women's basketball freshman guard Brittany Martin (Sicklerville, New Jersey) was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday, November 16.
Martin was one of the go-to scorers in her first career game in a Bobcat uniform as she finished with 16 points on 4-of-8 shooting, 2-of-4 from three and a perfect 6-of-6 at the free throw line. Martin added two rebounds and one assist while leading the team with 29 minutes played. The 16-point effort for Martin in fact goes down as the highest-scoring debut for a Quinnipiac freshman since her sister Jasmine Martin '15 tallied 20 points in her career debut against James Madison on Nov. 11, 2011.
Going up against the always stingy Army West Point defense, Martin played the point and pushed the pace as part of the Bobcats' up-tempo style all afternoon against the Black Knights. Even with the tough matchup, Martin and the Bobcats committed just 10 turnovers while forcing Army into 16 turnovers on the other end.
For the Bobcats, Martin's individual honor marks just the second MAAC Rookie of the Week award won by a Quinnipiac player in program history. The lone other MAAC Rookie of the Week honoree was Adily Martucci who picked up the award on Dec. 30, 2013.
Quinnipiac (0-1) returns to action on Thursday, Nov. 19 with an 11 AM matchup against in-state rival Hartford. The game also serves as the second annual "Kids Day at the Bank," drawing local school-aged children to the early tip-off as a way of promoting the sport of women's basketball.
