NON-CONFERENCE CLASH
The Quinnipiac women's volleyball team will take a break from MAAC play this weekend when they travel to Lowell, Mass. for a meeting with the UMass Lowell River Hawks. The Bobcats will visit the Costello Athletic Center for a 1 p.m. showdown on Sunday, October 25.
ALL-TIME AGAINST UMASS LOWELL
UMass Lowell holds a 2-0 all-time record against the Bobcats. Last season, the River Hawks swept Quinnipiac in their home opener (17-25, 17-25, 19-25) at the Burt Kahn Court in Hamden. Earlier this year, Quinnipiac visited the Costello Athletic Center for the UMass Lowell Invitational. The River Hawks defeated QU in five sets (20-25, 25-11, 19-25, 25-17, 5-15) in the final match of the tournament. Katie Urycki led the Bobcats with a double-double, posting 16 kills and 11 digs.
SCOUTING THE RIVER HAWKS
UMass Lowell enters Sunday's matchup with a 4-18 overall record and at 1-5 in the America East Conference. After picking up their first win of the season against Quinnipiac, the River Hawks went on to defeat Mississippi Valley State (3-0), Bryant (3-0) and Hartford (3-2). UMass is currently trying to break a three game losing streak. Freshman Haley Shimon leads the offense with 179 kills, averaging 2.32 per set.
LAST TIME OUT
On Thursday, the Bobcats hosted the second annual Dig Pink Event to benefit the Side-Out Foundation and help raise funds for breast cancer research. While donning pink uniforms in front of a large home crowd, Quinnipiac fell to the Fairfield Stags in straight sets (16-25, 17-25, 15-25).
KILLS FROM KATIE
After recording 10 kills against Fairfield, junior Katie Urycki has led the Bobcats in kills in three of the last four matches. In the last meeting against UMass, Urycki posted 16 kills and 11 digs in the five set loss.
FAMILIAR SURROUNDINGS
Freshman Kat Miller had a day to remember on Saturday of the UMass Lowell Invitational. On her way to being named to the All-Tournament Team, Miller displayed her versatility on the court, posting a combined 64 assists, 22 digs, 15 total blocks and 10 kills through two games. Against San Jose State, the freshman nearly recorded a triple-double, tallying 29 assists, 10 digs and nine blocks. She followed up that performance with another double-double against the host school. In the second game Miller registered 35 assists, 11 digs and six blocks.
MILLER TIME
Against Manhattan, Miller recorded her sixth double-double of the season. She led the Bobcats in assists with 21 and in digs, tallying 13. Earlier in the season the freshman posted four consecutive double-doubles. She leads the team with 279 assists averaging 3.62 per set while also topping the ranks with 222 digs and a 2.88 per set average.
BLOCK PARTY
Sophomore Elizabeth Kloos leads the Bobcats with 78 total blocks. Kloos ranks third in the overall MAAC statistics with a 0.98 blocks per set average. She has 13 solo and 65 assisted blocks on the year. In the most recent match, Kloos recorded five blocks. Against UMass Lowell, the sophomore posted eight total blocks.
WE WILL, WE WILL BLOCK YOU
Quinnipiac leads the MAAC with a 2.14 blocks per set average. They have 171.5 total blocks which include 39 solo blocks and 265 assisted. Kloos leads QU with 78 blocks while Kat Miller has 66 and junior Sam Alechko 65 to the total.
COFFEY ON THE GRIND
For the fifth time in six matches, freshman outside hitter Jen Coffey tallied at least 10 kills. In two straight matches she led QU with 13 kills. Against Saint Peter's, Coffey tallied a career high 13 kills on 35 attacks. The freshman hit at a .257 clip while adding one block and two digs. She matched that total against Marist on 23 swings with a .304 hitting percentage. Coffey leads the squad with a 2.67 kills per set average and is 10th in the league with a 2.79 average in conference play.
FAMILIAR FOE
With the win over Saint Peter's, the Bobcats secured their first MAAC win in nearly two years. Quinnipiac's last conference victory came on November 3, 2013 in Jersey City when they took down the Peacocks in five sets.
HITTING THEIR STRIDE
The Bobcats played some of their best volleyball of the year in the second set against Saint Peter's. Quinnipiac captured a huge, 25-7 win in the frame. The Bobcats went on 8-0, 6-0 and 5-0 runs in the victory while recording zero errors and a .562 hitting percentage.
COMEBACK KIDS
In the third set against Saint Peter's, the Bobcats came from behind multiple times to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Down 16-9, Quinnipiac went on a 10-2 run to take a one point lead with the help of five Bobcat slams and a Miller service ace. The Peacocks rebounded with six straight points to go up, 24-19 and needed just one more point for the victory. Quinnipiac answered with their best play of the day, the Bobcats shutout the Peacocks while rallying off seven consecutive points for the win.
KLOOS LETS LOOSE
Against Dartmouth, the sophomore tied a season-high 14 kills while leading all players with a .571 attack percentage. Kloos also added two total blocks and a service ace to her resume.
ON DECK
The Bobcats return to Hamden next week when they host the Siena Saints in a mid-week conference matchup. On Wednesday, October 28, Quinnipiac will take on the Saints at 7 p.m. from Burt Kahn Court. Earlier this season Siena defeated QU, 3-1.
