HOLMDEL, N.J. – The Quinnipiac women's cross country team showcased their superior depth on Saturday as the Bobcats captured the Monmouth Invitational victory from Holmdel Park. In what has now become a fixture within the women's cross country program, Quinnipiac's depth was on fully display in Saturday's meet as five Bobcats placed in the Top 10 overall. For the day, Quinnipiac totaled 31 points which was more than double the day's total for the second place finisher in Marist (71).
"The women ran great today," said Quinnipiac head coach Carolyn Martin. "The girls all packed up really well and executed our plan perfectly. You couldn't ask for much more in this group of young girls as we've had juniors and sophomores step into leadership positions and our freshmen have all grown considerably throughout the season. With this young group, we're all really excited for future meets this year.
In what was a key meet for the Bobcats in their 2014 schedule, Saturday's race was run on the same course (Holmdel Park) in which the MAAC Championship will be held on Oct. 31. Their first run at the Holmdel Park course certainly was a significant one as the Bobcats dominated the competition on the scoreboard and marked the 10th straight season in which Quinnipiac has won an event.

Quinnipiac's underclassmen contingent factored heavily in the decision as sophomore Niamh Ashe (East Islip, N.Y.) dominated once again, placing 3rd overall and first on the team on Saturday. The Bobcats' 2013 All-New England and All-MAAC runner continued her streak as she has now placed first on the team in all seven career appearances with Quinnipiac. At the Holmdel Park course, Ashe was the fastest sophomore runner as she finished the meet in 18:41.4.
Also continuing her strong start to the 2014 season on Saturday was freshman Emily Wolff (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) who placed right behind Ashe in 5th overall. Running in her debut season with the Bobcats, Wolff shined as the fastest freshmen among all 171 competitors. Wolff finished the meet in 18:45.2 as she also picked up her first career Top 5 finish in the process.
Yet another underclassmen followed suit as freshman Kaleigh Roberts (Higganum, Conn.) scored a 7th place result to piggyback the strong showing from Ashe and Wolff. A distinguished high school competitor, taking home Southern Connecticut Conference Runner of the Year honors in 2013, Roberts continues to prove her talent as she adds another Top 10 finish to start the season. After placing 8th overall at the Stony Brook Invitational on Aug. 31, Roberts crossed the finish line amongst a talented field in 18:49.2.
The remainder of the Bobcats' top five runners on Saturday featured a pair of juniors in Tracy Campbell (Wall Township, N.J.) and Chelsea Savage (Pembroke, Mass.). Campbell scored her fourth career Top 10 finish as she placed 9th overall with a time of 18:53.2. Savage also impressed with her first career Top 10 finish, clocking in at 18:55.2.
Quinnipiac will now prepare for the most crowded field of the 2014 season as the Bobcats will travel down to Bethlehem, Pa. for the Paul Short Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 4.
