Baltimore, Md. – It was a tough end to a promising weekend for Quinnipiac as the Bobcats lost their doubleheader on Saturday afternoon to close out the Greyhound Invitational Tournament. The Bobcats would drop the first match to St. Francis (Pa.) 3-1 and were swept in the last game by Dartmouth 3-0.
Game 1
The first game of the doubleheader pitted the Bobcats against the St. Francis Red Flash to kick off Saturday's action. This never figured to be an easy match by any stretch as the Red Flash had a 16-6 record against Quinnipiac coming into today's game.
After dropping the first set of the match 25-22, the Bobcats would rebound in the second set with a 28-26 win. In that set, the Bobcats would jump out to an early 8-3 lead which proved to be enough insurance to thwart a St. Francis comeback. In the third set, the Bobcats would fall 25-19 and also fall in the fourth set by a score of 25-23. The Bobcats clawed their way back into that match tying and kept tying Saint Francis, and even took a 23-22 before St. Francis scored three straight points to take the match.
Once again the Bobcats would rely upon sophomore Katie Urycki (Chesterton, Ind.) and freshman Jamie Termotto (Smithtown, N.Y.) to power the offense. Urycki led the team will 11 kills with Termotto adding 10 kills of her own. Sophomore Allison Leigh (Palmer, Alaska) also provided a big game on both sides of the ball. With 6 kills, and 5 blocks she provided a big presence around the net for Quinnipiac throughout the game. Sophomore Cody Michaels (Versailles, Ky.) once again was stout on the defensive end leading the team with 26 digs while finishing second on the team with 6 assists.
Game 2
Quinnipiac would face a tough test in the afternoon as they would play Dartmouth immediately after there long game with Saint Francis. Dartmouth was on a roll by winning their first two matches of the tournament by a combined score of 6-1. Dartmouth continued the early perfection by sweeping the Bobcats in three straight set.
Dartmouth not only had a more experienced team, but were well rested after their first match at 11:00am. It was clear that fatigue from a long and closely contest match against St. Francis had taken their toll. The Bobcats would fall three straight 25-20 25-22 25-14.
The Bobcats put up a valiant effort including taking a 10-7 lead in the second match. However, after Dartmouth tied the match a 20 apiece, they would finish off Quinnipiac with a 5-2 run.
Freshman Cheyenne Orsi (Bristol, Conn.) and Elizabeth Kloos (Munster, Ind.) played well along the net as they each led the Bobcats with three blocks apiece. Urycki would once again led the attack for the Bobcats with 7 kills while also adding 5 digs and a block. Freshman Sierra Dawson (Larkspur, Calif.) once again proved why she is a valuable setter leading the team with 18 assists.
The Bobcats will next be in action on Friday Sept. 12th as they will play in the Providence College Invitational Tournament next weekend. On Friday the Bobcats will take on Fairleigh Dickinson at 5:00 followed by another Saturday of doubleheader action. The double dip begins at 12:30 against Morgan St. and wraps up at 4:30 against the host team Providence.
