STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Freshmen Kyle Alper (Dix Hills, N.Y.) and Willem van Biezen (Warmond, The Netherlands) each won their Flight championship at the Stony Brook Invitational in their first collegiate tournament. These championships highlighted a very successful weekend for the Quinnipiac men's tennis team as the Bobcats sent a team to the championship in each Flight of the doubles portion of the tournament.
"It was a tough field we faced at the Stony Brook Invitational," said interim head coach Chris Pappas. "We had a strong showing overall, as shown by all the players we had competing in flight championships."
Alper returned to his winning ways on Saturday afternoon when he won his semifinal matchup against UConn's Jonathon Edwards, 6-1, 7-6 (1) to earn a spot in the championship. His persistence paid off, as Alper came from behind to defeat Richard Rannga from NJIT, 3-6, 6-4, 10-8 to win the Flight "C" championship.
In Flight "D," van Biezen was just as successful as he defeated Justin Park from Stony Brook in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. From there, van Biezen battled Park's collegiate teammate Albert Fontoya in the championship match, also coming from behind to win the Flight "D" Championship, 3-6, 7-5, 10-6.
Senior Eric Ambrosio (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) nearly brought home a third championship for the Bobcats as he competed into the championship match of the Consolation Flight "A" bracket. Ambrosio defeated UConn's Jacob Spreyer, 8-2, before taking down NJIT's Andres Alban, 8-5. Ambrosio's run finally came to an end in the championship when he lost to Ari Richman from Hofstra, 8-4.
The Bobcats also had junior Jonas Kuwert (Jesteberg, Germany) still playing in Flight "A," but he lost in a semifinal matchup with eventual Flight "A" champion Arvis Berzins from Fairleigh Dickinson, 8-4.
Quinnipiac also had a solid showing in the doubles tournament earlier in the day as Kuwert and freshman Julian Rozenstein (Marlboro, NJ) reached the championship of Flight "A" while teammates junior Luke Roser (Bernardsville, N.J.) and van Biezen clawed their way into the championship match of Flight "B."
Kuwert and Rozenstein picked up right where they left off after Day One when they took on Alexandre Felisa and Jose Morales from the hosts, Stony Brook. With the 8-2 win, Kuwert and Rozenstein launched themselves into the finals of Flight "A." Their run came to an end in the championship match; however, when they fell to Fairleigh Dickinson's Arvis Berzins and Gonzalo Quintana, 8-4.
The second Bobcat duo of Roser and van Biezen had to fight their way into the championship, picking up a win over Albert Fontoya and Justin Park of Stony Brook, 8-7 (0). After the hard fought match, Roser and van Biezen met Ricky Hendler and Niko Vulinovich from Hofstra in the championship. Quinnipiac's duo fell short in the match, 8-3.
Quinnipiac Men's Tennis returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 16 when it hosts Siena at the QU Outdoor Tennis Courts at 3 PM.
