HACKENSACK, N.J. - The Quinnipiac women's volleyball team got a huge road victory against the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights on Wednesday night. After falling to the Knights on September 12th at the Friar Classic Tournament earlier this season, the Bobcats overcame a 2-1 deficit to get the win, 3-2. With a big conference game against the defending MAAC Champion Fairfield Stags this Saturday, Quinnipiac will look to use this momentum to play spolier on the road this weekend.
After falling to to the Knights in the third set, 25-16, the Bobcats were backed into a corner starting the fourth set. The set would see alot of back and forth action with the teams briefly taking leads only to be tied soon after. After taking a 12-9 lead, the Bobcats would find themselves in a 20-17 hole. However, the Bobcats knotted the score up at 23-23 and would then capitalize on a service error and attack error by the Knights to win the set.
In the fifth and final set the Bobcats roared out of the gate to take an early 4-2 lead. After the Knights fought back to trail by just one point at 9-8, the Bobcats finished off their former confernece foe in immpressive fashion with a 6-3 run that clinched the match. Sophomore outside hitter Katie Urycki (Chesterton,Ind.) provided the clinching blow with her 19th and final kill to finish the match.
Urycki continues her sensational play of late as she followed up her record breaking performance on Sunday with her second best performance of the season. Urycki once again led the Bobcats with 19 kills and now has 56 kills (18.7 per match average) over her last three contests.
Her fellow sophomore classmate, Allison Leigh (Palmer, Alaska) had her best game of the season as the duo paired up all evening to create an impressive inside-out presence. With 16 kills, Leigh posted a new season high and fell only one kill short of her personal best of 17 that she set against Manhattan last season. Leigh also added five blocks and had a season high four service aces. Combined with Urycki's 19 kills on Wednesday, the sophomore pairing posted 35 of the Bobcats' 49 kills on the evening.
Another player who built off of a strong weekend performance was the Bobcats' freshman Cheyenne Orsi (Bristol, Conn.). After an impressive game on Sunday in which she tallied a season high nine kills, Orsi dominated around the net for the Bobcats with a team leading nine blocks while adding eight kills against Fairleigh Dickinson. Orsi entered Sunday's match against Iona with just 16 kills in her first six appearances of her career but over the last two games she has posted 18 kills (nine per match average) while hitting the ball at a ridiculous .502 clip in those two matchups.
Quinnipiac returns to the hardwood this weekend in search of its second straight win. The Bobcats travel to Fairfield University on Saturday, Sept. 27 before heading over to Hartford on Sunday, Sept. 28. Both matches begin at 1 p.m.
