HAMDEN, Conn. - The Bobcats fell in their opening game this weekend falling to the Marist Red Foxes, 3-0, in a conference matchup on Saturday from Burt Kahn Court. Despite playing the Red Foxes close in the final two sets, the Bobcats fell in three sets (25-15, 25-20, 25-21). With the loss, Quinnipiac drops to 2-14 and 0-4 in conference while Marist improves to 14-2 on the season and remains unbeaten in the MAAC with a 6-0 conference record.
The Bobcats were led on the attack by senior right side Tanner Celestin (Norco, Calif.) with seven kills and one block in the game. Celestin came off the bench in all three sets to light some fire into the Quinnipiac rotation and finished with an impressive .312 hitting percentage for the match.
Freshman setter Sierra Dawson (Larkspur, Calif.) had an impressive all-around showing against a powerhouse Marist squad that leads the MAAC with 14 victories. Dawson recorded 20 assists in the game. She now has eight matches this season with at least 20 assists as the team's setter. while she also added three blocks and two digs.
Another freshman middle hitter Elizabeth Kloos (Munster, Ind.) also had a strong performance against Marist. This game marked the third game in a row where Kloos has had at least five kills. Kloos would also lead Quinnipiac in blocks with five in the game.
Sophomore Cody Michaels (Versailles, Kentucky) turned in another fine defensive performance as the team's libero. Michaels once again led the team in digs with 11 and now has double digit digs in nine games this season for Quinnipiac.
After falling behind in the first set, 10-7, the Bobcats would rally to back to a 12-11 deficit. The Quinnipiac run force Marist into a timeout, but the Red Foxes capitalized with their best run of the game to finish the set on a 13-4 run while scoring seven points in a row coming out of their time out.
After a back-and-forth second set where the Bobcats were unable to tie and take the lead despite fighting back on multiple occasions, Quinnipiac would take their biggest lead of the match in the third set as the Bobcats forced a Marist timeout after building a 19-16 advantage. Once again coming out of the timeout, Marist roared back with a 9-2 run including four straight points on the beginning of the run to take the match and the game.
The Bobcats return to the court tomorrow afternoon to take on the Siena Saints in another big MAAC game. Quinnipiac will still be looking for their first conference win as the first serve will take place at 1:00 pm.
