Hamden, Conn. – Despite another gritty effort, the Quinnipiac women's volleyball team fell to the University of Hartford Hawks by the score of 3-0 on Tuesday night. The Bobcats could not hold off the Hawks in the final two sets despite spirited efforts, dropping the second set 25-22 and the third set 26-24. With the win the Hawks improve to 14-11 on the season while Quinnipiac falls to 2-24.
Senior outside hitter Tierra Allen (Sumter, S.C.) had her best offensive performance of the season leading the Bobcats with 12 kills on the night. Allen has played well over the last two matches combining for 19 kills in her best back-to back performances this season. This is her best offensive outing since Spet. 10, 2011 when she had a career high 15 kills against Navy.
It was another great night for the sophomore class represented by both middle hitter Allison Leigh (Palmer, Alaska) and outside hitter Katie Urycki (Chesterton, Ind.). Leigh had another dominant performance around the net with a game-high eight blocks on the night giving her over 100 blocks on the season. Leigh also had another big offensive game for Quinnipiac adding nine kills and a service ace in the effort against Hartford. Urycki also played a vital role along the back line as she added nine kills herself, tying with Leigh for second-most kills on the night, while also adding seven digs.
The sophomore class also got another great defensive performance out of libero Cody Michaels (Versailles, Ky.). In the match she had her third-highest dig total of the season finishing the match with 21, once again leading the team.
Quinnipiac's freshman class also played their part in the match Tuesday night. Defensive specialist Nicole Milillo (Lynbrook, N.Y.) continues to remain red hot at the service line. With three aces in the match tonight, she has combined for five aces over the previous two matches and now owns the team lead for service aces with 30 on the season. Setter Sierra Dawson (Larkspur, Calif.) continued her fine season as the team setter with 36 assists against Hartford. Over her past two games Dawson has combined for 77 assists and this current streak marks the third time this season when Dawson has had 35 plus assists in back-to-back matches.
The Quinnipiac Bobcats will be back in action this weekend as they take on in-state and conference rival Fairfield at home this Saturday at 1 p.m. The Bobcats will be looking for their first win against Fairfield in the program's history and will look to use their home court advantage at Burt Kahn Court to do just that.
