WALLINGFORD, Conn. – Quinnipiac freshman Krissy Unger (New York, N.Y.) became the first medalist in program history at the Quinnipiac Classic. Unger's top individual score guided the Bobcats as head coach John O'Connor also picked up his first tournament win.
Unger started the day tied for the lead with Merrimack's Ali Reed and Wagner's Kathryn Jimerson. The Bobcats also trailed Merrimack by two strokes after the first round but pulled away in the second round, defeating the Warriors by four strokes, 661 -666. Unger paired her first-day 79 (+7) with a 77 (+5) for a two-day total of 156 (+12 ).
Unger's 77 matches her previous best score which she posted at the Rutger's Invitational on Oct. 5 while her two-day total lines-up five strokes better than her previous personal-best of 161 at the Delaware State Invitational on Oct. 13-14.
Senior Kayla Ketcheson (St. Andrews, Manitoba) finished the first round of the event, held on Monday at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn., tied for eighth place with an 83 (+11). Ketcheson shot an 82 (+10) at The Farms for a two-day total of 165 (+23). Jenn Whaley (Avon, Conn.) finished in 14th place at 173 (81-92, +31) followed by Hannah Russell (Monson, Mass.), who improved on her first-day 90 with an 84 for a 174 (+32) and tie for 15th place. Taylor Lambrou (Baldwin, N.Y.) improved by six strokes from the first day. Lambrou shot a 91 on Monday, but shed six strokes to shoot an 85 on Tuesday.
Competing as individuals, Alexa Gentile (Avon, Conn.), Jessica Rotell (Cheshire, Conn.), Angelica Muscatelli (North Providence, R.I.) and Jennifer Forlenza (Wayne, N.J.) all improved on their first day totals. Gentile and Rotell went from shooting 104 and 105, respectively, on the first day with identical 91's. Muscatelli saw a two-stroke improvement, from 99 to 97, while Forlenza bounced back from a 106 on Monday with a 93 on Tuesday.
