Celebrated over numerous years of coaching at multiple levels down in Florida, Chad Davis came to Hamden for his first season as an assistant coach in 2016 for the women's volleyball program and had an immediate impact on the program.
In his first season with the Bobcats, Davis had a major role in leading Quinnipiac to the largest single-season turnaround (18 wins) in the country, improving from three wins to 21. The Bobcats more than doubled their previous record for most wins in a season as full Division I members (10) while reaching the championship of their conference tournament for the first time at the Division I level. His work with the hitters led to two first-team All-MAAC selections in Allison Leigh and Jen Coffey, only the third and fourth first-team all-league selections in the program's Division I history (and the first since 2002).
Armed with a distinguished 20-year coaching career, Davis brought with him a wealth of experience as he immediately helped to build Quinnipiac into a contender in the MAAC. Coaching in multiple disciplines (high school, club and college), Davis has enjoyed a steady run complete with team success, championships and several Coach of the Year laurels at every level.
Davis stepped into his new role at Quinnipiac after serving as the director and coach of one of the top volleyball clubs in the state of Florida, the Gainesville Juniors Volleyball Club, for two different stints (1998-2001, 2007-16) totaling 14 seasons. During his time at Gainesville Juniors, all 14 of his teams qualified for the Girls' Junior National Championships, including twice in the Open Division.
In the 2001 season, his U15 National Team finished ninth overall in the country in the Open Division. His teams have won the Big South, Disney, Colorado Crossroads, Northeast and Northern Lights National Qualifiers. In 2015, his U17 Elite Team finished runner-up in the U17 American Division at the Junior National Championships. His 2014 and 2015 teams won the AAU National Championship in the U16 and U17 Club Division.
In addition to his work with one of the top volleyball clubs in the nation, Davis also served as the head coach of the nationally-ranked P.K. Yonge Blue wave. During his three-year run at the helm, the Blue Wave posted an overall record of 89-5, including back-to-back state championships in 2014 and 2015. Davis was named Florida High School coach of the Year in 2015 in addition to being named the 2015 Class 3A Coach of the Year, 2014 Florida 4A Coach of the Year and also was decorated as a three-time Gainesville Sun Coach of the Year.
His most-recent 2015 squad was simply dominant as the Blue Wave finished with a record of 31-1 overall and was ranked No. 4 nationally by PrepVolleyball.com and MaxPreps. The Blue Wave were nationally-ranked all three years when Davis was head coach.
His first head coaching experience came at Lawton Chiles High School in the early to mid 2000’s, highlighted by a 2005 season in which he was named the Florida High School Class 5A Coach of the Year after leading his team to a runner-up finish in Class 5A at the state tournament.
Back in his startup years in the coaching ranks, Davis served as an assistant at Gainesville High School from 1997-2000. In his final year at Gainesville High School, his team won the state championship while they also advanced to four consecutive state final fours in his tenure.
At the college level, Davis was named CVAC Coach of the Year after leading Division II Mt. Olive College to a 30-10 record in 2002 which still stands as a school record for wins and he also started the men’s volleyball program.
