Van Schoot Earns Second NEC Defensive Player of the Week Award

HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac field hockey goalkeeper Meike van Schoot was named the NEC Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Tuesday, September 22nd.

The first-year goalkeeper has now earned three NEC weekly awards this season, including Defensive Player and Rookie of the Week on Sept. 9.

Van Schoot anchored Quinnipiac in victories over NEC foe Sacred Heart and non-conference opponent Columbia, helping the Bobcats extend their winning streak to three games. She recorded 16 saves on the weekend while allowing just two goals, lowering her goals-against average to 1.83 and leading the NEC with a .797 save percentage.

In Quinnipiac's overtime victory over Sacred Heart, van Schoot made nine saves, including six on penalty corners. She followed that performance with seven saves against Columbia, allowing just one goal while facing eight penalty corners as the Bobcats secured a 2-1 comeback victory.

Rozemarijn Van Keulen and Julia Lutz joined van Schoot as NEC Prime Performers. Van Keulen opened the weekend with an assist in Quinnipiac's conference-opening win over Sacred Heart before delivering a standout performance against Columbia. After the Lions took a 1-0 lead early in the third quarter, van Keulen responded with the equalizer just minutes later and then netted the game-winning goal with four minutes remaining in regulation to secure the comeback victory. With her first multi-goal game of the season, van Keulen now leads the NEC with four goals and 10 points.

Lutz recorded her first career game-winning goal in Quinnipiac's OT victory over Sacred Heart. After the Pioneers scored with seven seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime, Lutz found the back of the net just 2:17 into the extra period to lift the Bobcats to their second straight OT win. Lutz played all 62 minutes and made the most of her lone shot on goal, converting it into the game-winner. The first-year midfielder's goal secured Quinnipiac's first NEC victory of the season and its first since rejoining the conference.
