HAMDEN, CT — For the second consecutive year, the Quinnipiac men's ice hockey program will have representation at one of the most prestigious ice hockey tournaments in the world, as junior defenseman and assistant captain Elliott Groenewold has been named to the U.S. Collegiate Selects for the 2026 Spengler Cup.
The 98th edition of the oldest club hockey tournament in the world will be held Dec. 26 to 31 at Eisstadion Davos in Davos, Switzerland and it will be the second time that a team representing college hockey's best will partake.
"I am incredibly honored and excited to represent Quinnipiac and the NCAA for this tournament," Groenewold said. "College hockey is filled with talented players from across the country, and having the opportunity to compete alongside them is something I am really looking forward to. The Spengler Cup has such a rich history and is one of the most prestigious tournaments in hockey, making this opportunity even more special."
The Springfield, Vt., native is coming off a decorated 2025-26 campaign, earning the ECAC's Best Defensive Defenseman award, as well as First Team All-League honors. He appeared in all 40 contests for the Bobcats, finishing with 20 points. He also led the nation with a plus-39 rating, the highest mark by any skater since 2015-16. He's started hot in 2026-27 with five assists in four games, tied for the team lead.
The U.S. Collegiate Selects made their debut at the 2025 Spengler Cup, earning a berth in the Final before falling to host H.C. Davos. Current junior Chris Pelosi represented the Bobcats on that roster. The USCS will open play at the 98th edition of the Spengler Cup on Saturday, Dec. 26 against Frölunda HC, which is based in Gothenburg, Sweden and won the 2026 European Champions Hockey League. The U.S. Collegiate Selects are once again in Group Cattini, and will also face host HC Davos on either Dec. 27 or Dec. 28 depending on the result against Frölunda HC. The USCS finished atop Group Cattini in its inaugural showing last year.
The Spengler Cup is the oldest invitational hockey tournament in the world, with the first edition held in 1923. The annual competition is held each December between Christmas and New Year's in Davos, Switzerland and features six teams from Europe and North America competing at the Eisstadion Davos. Hosts HC Davos have the most titles with 17, including last year.
