Klein Rounds Out Staff for 2023 Campaign

HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac field hockey Head Coach Nina Klein has announced her staff for the 2023 campaign, retaining assistant coach Abby Lucas, while adding Madison Skeie as an assistant coach as well.
"I am excited to announce that we are bringing Abby Lucas and Madison Skeie to our coaching unit for this fall," Klein said. "I can't wait to see them with our group in the coming weeks as we head into preseason."
Lucas enters her second season as an assistant coach with the Quinnipiac University field hockey team in 2023 and her first under Klein.
Lucas' first season in 2022 was one for the books for the Bobcats, as Quinnipiac earned eight wins on the campaign, a five-win increase from the season prior. That season, the Bobcats notched two wins over ranked opponents, marking the first time in program history where that has happened in a single season. In the wins over No. 22 Maine and No. 24 Penn, the Bobcats shut out both opponents.
Quinnipiac logged four shutouts on the season, marking the most by the team in a single season since 2013 (7). Primarily working with the goalkeepers, Lucas was pivotal in the development first-year keeper Cristina Torres. Of the four shutouts recorded for QU in 2022, Torres was responsible for three of them, including the two over ranked opponents. Torres also logged 57 minutes in the team shutout victory in the season finale against Sacred Heart. As a first-year, Torres was named BIG EAST Rookie of the week twice.
"As an assistant last season, Lucas coached our goalkeepers to new heights," Klein said. "Under her leadership with the defense and goalkeepers, we witnessed the program reach earn two major shutout wins, against two nationally ranked opponents. Abby brings a depth of knowledge to our team as well as a tireless work ethic. I am eager to work with her and watch her grow in season two of working with our Bobcats."
Skeie enters her first season as a member of the Quinnipiac staff, previously serving as an assistant coach for Monmouth for the 2022 season. In her inaugural season with the Hawks, Skeie helped lead Monmouth to 10 wins, including a 5-1 record in CAA play.
Skeie also helped coach Annick Van Lange to Third Team All-American status, Phileine Hazen to CAA Rookie of the Year honors, and a total of five student-athletes to the All-CAA team.
"Maddie comes to us from Monmouth University, a program that has seen success year in and year out," Klein said. "Maddie has created a coaching brand for herself that is rooted in hard work, discipline, and positive energy. Her leadership will continue to help our program succeed on the field and in the classroom."
Prior to Monmouth, Skeie had a stint as an assistant at Johnson and Wales University in Rhode Island. At JWU, Skeie handled the day-to-day operations of the field hockey program including practice planning, on-field coaching, individual workouts, video analysis, travel and recruiting efforts for the Wildcats. Under new leadership, the Wildcats went from winning six games in the previous campaign to 17.
The Bobcats open their season on the road at New Hampshire on August 25, before returning to Hamden for its home opener against UMass on August 27.
