HAMDEN, Connecticut – As voted on by the players and staff members of the Quinnipiac women's basketball team, Jackie Grisdale has been named captain for the 2023-24 campaign, marking the first time Head Coach Tricia Fabbri has named a captain since the 2017-18 season.
"Leadership is about responsibility," said Quinnipiac head coach Tricia Fabbri. "Jackie has been recognized by her teammates, coaches and staff personnel. She brings unique leadership characteristics and as a whole will serve this team well for this season."
"Being surrounded by 14 other determined and talented young women, all sharing the same aspiration to improve each day and displaying an unwavering passion for the game of basketball, fills me with excitement for the upcoming year. November 6th can't come soon enough!"
Quinnipiac women's basketball's announcement places Grisdale into an official leadership title for the first time in her career. Grisdale becomes the first singular captain in Quinnipiac's Div. I history and first under Fabbri during her 29 years at the helm of the program.
Grisdale was named to the Preseason All-MAAC Second Team as announced by the league office as part of the inaugural MAAC Basketball Tipoff held at Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City, NJ. on Tuesday, Oct. 17.
As a sophomore last season, Grisdale started in all 30 games and averaged career-highs of 9.9 points, 2.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 0.8 steals per game. Her 9.9 points per game ranked second on the Bobcats last season. Regarded as a top-notch defender, Grisdale earned Christmas City Classic All-Tournament honors last season after holding the Bobcats' opponents' season-leading scorers to a combined total of five points on 2-for-11 (18.1%) shooting during the tournament.
As a first-year and walk-on for the 2021-22 season, Grisdale appeared in 27 games and averaged 4.7 points and 1.6 rebounds per game en route to earning MAAC All-Rookie Team honors. With the recognition, Grisdale became the first walk-on in program history to earn all-conference honors as a walk-on.
That season, Grisdale shot 40.5% from the field and 35.6% from beyond the arc. She had a breakout performance on Jan. 29 on the road against Niagara, as she tallied career-highs of 26 points and tied the program record for most made three-pointers in a game (6) in the road victory. Grisdale scored 23 of her 26 points in the second half of that contest to help Quinnipiac overcome a 26-point deficit in a win. The 26-point comeback victory is tied for the second-largest comeback victory in NCAA Div. I women's basketball history.
Grisdale and the Bobcats open the 2023-24 campaign on Monday, Nov. 6, as the new-look Bobcats start their season at home inside of M&T Bank Arena with Maine. Unbeaten in three matchups with the Black Bears, Quinnipiac will take on the America East powerhouse for the first time since 2016, where the Bobcats earned its first-ever postseason national tournament victory in the WNIT.
