HAMDEN, Conn. — It's travel partner weekend as the No. 4/5 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey program takes on Princeton in a home-and-home series for the two squads. The Bobcats and Tigers battle on Friday night at Hobey Baker Rink in New Jersey before heading to M&T Bank Arena on Saturday.
SCOUTING PRINCETON
- The Tigers enter the weekend at 2-3-0, fresh off a weekend sweep of Brown and Yale.
- Jack Cronin scored the winner on Saturday night, recording the tally 5:25 into the third to give the Bobcats the win. He's tied with Brendan Gorman for the team lead with three tallies.
- Adam Robbins and Pito Walton are tied atop the team points leaderboard with four apiece.
- Ethan Pierson and Aidan Porter have split time this season, with Pierson started three games and Porter starting two.
- First Year Sam Lipkin dished a career-high four assists on Saturday night, en route to the Bobcats' 4-0 victory over Yale. It is one of four such performances by a palyer in NCAA hockey this season and one of two by a first-year player (Karsen Dorwart, Michigan State).
- Lipkin is the first Bobcat first-year to reach that milestone since Matthew Peca recorded that number against Brown on Feb. 24, 2012. He also leads the team currently with seven helpers on the year.
J-QUILLAN
- Sophomore forward Jacob Quillan has taken off in his second season with the Bobcats, already besting his 2021-22 point output with ten on the current campaign. He also has five goals on the year, more than double what he totaled a season ago.
- His multi-goal game last saturday against Cornell was the first of his collegiate career and his fourth multi-point contest, three of which have come this season.
EXPERIENCE
- The Bobcats have one of the most experienced rosters in the country, with four players inside the Top 15 among active career leaders in appearances.
- Ethan de Jong currently sits at 153 appearances, good for second in the country, tied with Bowling Green's Alex Barber. The same squad's Taylor Schneider enters the weekend with 158 career appearances, the most in the country.
- For the Bobcats, Jacob Nordqvist (147), Zach Metsa (146) and Michael Lombardi (144) all sit inside the Top 15. They combine to make Quinnipiac the only school in the country to have four inside the Top 15 in appearances.
A LEAGUE OF HIS OWN
- Graduate forward Ethan de Jong is atop the national leaderboards, sitting with 114 career points, seven better than Penn State's Ashton Calder, who currently sits at 107.
- The forward also has 153 games played, which is good for second in the country.
SHUTTIN' IT DOWN (AND OUT)
- Sophomore Yaniv Perets is in a league of his own, currently leading the country among active players with 14 in 42 appearances during his college career.
- Perets broke the program's single-season shutouts record, becoming the first person ever to reach double digits in that category with 11. He is five shy of the program's career record, set by Michael Garteig (19).
PICKED TO THREE-PEAT
- After securing its sixth in program history, the Bobcats were picked to three-peat and win the Cleary Cup once again, according to the ECAC Coaches' Poll, announced by the league office on Sept. 21.
- The squad received eight of a possible 12 first-place votes, securing 118 total points. They finished nine points ahead of second-place Harvard, who secured the other four selections to top the league.
- Captain Zach Metsa and sophomore goaltender Yaniv Perets were selected to the ECAC Men's Preseason All-League team as well.
- Metsa ranked second in the nation for assists by a defenseman in 2021-22, while Perets finished No. 1 nationally in goals-against average and shutouts.
BOBCATS WITH THE PROS
- Eight current Bobcats participated in NHL Development Camps this summer, as Yaniv Perets (Philadelphia Flyers), TJ Friedmann (St. Louis Blues), Zach Metsa (Buffalo Sabres) and Skyler Brind'Amour (Edmonton Oilers) will bring that experience back to Quinnipiac.
- The four incoming Bobcats invited were Sam Lipkin (Arizona Coyotes), Collin Graf (Florida Panthers), Charles Alexis Legault (Ottawa Senators) and Chase Clark (Washington Capitals).
USA! USA! USA!
- Quinnipiac head coach Rand Pecknold will lead Team USA at the 2023 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship starting Dec. 26, 2022 in Canada. They will open with Latvia that night at 5:00 PM AST and play Slovakia, Switzerland and Finland as part of Group B.
