Bobcats Lose Conference Opener in Dramatic Fashion

HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac field hockey fell to Temple, 3-2 in a Big East thriller on Friday, Sept. 17. The game was tied through two overtime periods and went to a penalty shootout, which Temple won, 3-1.

After Temple's Myrthe Schuilenburg opened the scoring on a penalty stroke with 31 seconds left in the first quarter, Quinnipiac first year Emilia Massarrelli deflected a Jess Halley shot and tied the game with one second on the clock.

Both teams scored within a four-minute span in the second quarter before going scoreless for the remainder of regulation and overtime.

NOTES

Temple earned 12 penalty corners in the game, scoring on one, while the Bobcats earned seven and also scored on one.
The Owls out-shot the Bobcats, 25-16, with 13 shots on goal to 10 for Quinnipiac.
First Year Emilia Massarelli was outstanding in her first BIG EAST game for the Bobcats, tallying her second and third career goals and recording total seven shots.
Fellow first years Lucia Pompeo and Stella Tegtmeier combined for six shots in the effort.
Junior goalkeeper Mack Vorel made 11 saves in the contest, which is her second most in a game over the course of her three-year career.
One green card was assessed to each team in the contest, as Temple's Claire Thomas was whistled for an infraction in the fourth quarter and Quinnipiac's Jess Halley was carded in overtime.
