Tufto Earns Player of the Month, Petruzzelli Nabs Goalie and Smilanic Named Rookie
ALBANY, N.Y. – The Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team swept the ECAC Hockey Monthly Awards for February as Odeen Tufto (Chaska, Minnesota) was named the Player of the Month for the second straight month, Keith Petruzzelli (Wilbraham, Massachusetts) earned Goaltender of the Month and Ty Smilanic (Denver, Colorado) picked up Rookie of the Month.
This is the first time the Bobcats have swept the ECAC Hockey Monthly Awards as Tufto earned his second player of the month and both Petruzzelli and Smilanic were honored for the first time.
Tufto tied for the national lead with 11 assists in the month and led all ECAC Hockey skaters with 12 points, tied for the eighth most in the nation in February. Tufto also led the league with 92 faceoff wins and a .657 faceoff percentage.
He ended the month with a four-game point streak, recording multiple points in all four games of the streak. He ended the month with an assist, the 125th of his career, to tie Reid Cashman '07 for the most in program history.
Tufto reached the 40-point mark this season for the third time in his career, and remains second in the nation in points and first in assists with 35.
Petruzzelli was unbeaten in February, going 6-0-1 on Quinnipiac's seven-game unbeaten streak. He also led ECAC Hockey with a 1.39 GAA and 938 save percentage, both of which ranked in the Top 10 in the nation in the month.
He bookended the month with two of his highest-save performances, starting with a 30-save performance in a 4-1 win against the Saints before making 29 stops in a 3-2 win in Canton against St. Lawrence on Feb. 27. He did not allow more than two goals in any game in the month.
So far this season, Petruzzelli is tied for second in the nation with 16 wins, is fifth with a 1.68 GAA and ranks eighth with his .931 save percentage. He has played the most games (25) of any goaltender in the nation, while his 1462:52 minutes between the pipes is also tops in the nation.
Smilanic had a solid month of February, leading all ECAC Hockey rookies with six points on three goals and three assists. His best performance yet came in the month of February, recording his first four-point effort with a goal and three assists against LIU on Feb. 22 in the middle of a three-game point streak.
He is now the national rookie leader in goals with 14, also tied for sixth in the nation overall. Smilanic also ranks first among national rookies averaging 0.56 goals per game, 10 power-play points, and four game-winning goals. He is tied for second with six power-play tallies.
The Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team hosts Colgate in a weekend series to wrap up the 2020-21 regular season with puck drop set for 6 p.m. on Friday night and 4 p.m. on Saturday.
