
Baseball Names Captains for 2021 Season

Three Graduate Students and a Senior Among the Leaders for Bobcats
HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac baseball coach John Delaney has announced the team's captains for the upcoming season, as voted on by the players and coaches of the program.
Graduate students Blake DeCarr (Foxboro, Massachusetts), Dylan Lutz (Denver, Colorado) and David Longstreeth (Hatfield, Massachusetts) as well as senior Ian Ostberg (Northampton, Massachusetts) received the honor to lead the Bobcats for the 2021 season.
DeCarr, Lutz and Longstreeth all chose to return to Quinnipiac in 2021 after their senior seasons in 2020 were cancelled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
DeCarr made four appearances in 2020, including two starts, as he was one of the Bobcats best pitchers in the shortened season. He went 1-0 with a 2.35 ERA, striking out 10 batters in 15.1 innings while holding opponents to a .208 batting average.
DeCarr earned his first career win at VMI on Feb. 28, 2020, as he struck out five batters and allowed two runs on five hits inn 5.1 innings in a 10-3 victory. He followed that up with an impressive start at No. 12 Mississippi State, tossing 5.1 with one strikeout, two runs and four hits allowed in a no decision against the Bulldogs.
In his career, DeCarr has made 24 appearances with nine starts and has struck out 57 batters in 71.1 innings. He has a career 5.43 ERA and opponents have hit .278 against him, but in two of his three seasons he has an ERA below 3.40 and opponent batting average below .240.
Lutz started all 14 games for the Bobcats in the shortened 2020 season and batted .245 with three doubles, five RBIs and six runs scored. He finished the season with 99 career hits.
He broke out in 2018 to lead the Bobcats with a .336 batting average in 30 games with 30 starts, scoring 27 runs and driving in 14 RBIs with four doubles and two home runs. He also drew 10 walks and stole five bases.
Lutz followed up that performance with a .286 batting average with 43 starts in 46 appearances in 2019, recording career-highs with 46 hits, 21 RBIs, 27 runs scored, six doubles and 18 walks. Lutz was dominant down the stretch, earning spots on the MAAC All-Tournament Team and the NCAA ECU Regional All-Tournament Team.
In his career, Lutz owns a .294 batting average with 99 hits, 40 RBIs and 61 runs scored. He also has a .359 on base percentage thanks to 32 walks.
Longstreeth has been an invaluable part of the program due to his leadership throughout his first four seasons. Last season, he made four appearances and had four strikeouts in three innings of work.
One of the best appearances of his career, he struck out three batters in 1.2 scoreless innings of relief at VMI in a 10-3 win. Longstreeth also made two appearances at No. 12 Mississippi State before earning his first career save with 0.2 innings of work in the Bobcats final game of the season, a 7-5 win at Kennesaw State.
Longstreeth has struck out 13 battings in 12.1 innings of work across his 13 career appearances.
Ostberg has thrived for the Bobcats, playing multiple positions in his career. He has been named to the All-MAAC Preseason Team in back-to-back seasons.
Last season in 2020, he batted .250 as he started all 14 games with two doubles, five RBIs and five runs scored. He also drew five walks for a .328 on base percentage.
Ostberg broke out in 2019 as he finished second on the team with a .321 batting average and 72 hits while recording 11 doubles, three home runs, 35 RBIs and scoring 37 runs. He drew 19 walks and stole 18 bases in the season as well to earn All-MAAC First Team honors and was named to the NEIBA All-New England Third Team.
In his career, Ostberg has batted .298 behind 134 hits. He's tallied 16 doubles, two triples, three home runs, 68 runs scored, 58 RBIs, 34 walks and 24 stolen bases.
The Quinnipiac baseball team opens the 2021 season with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 20 against the Monmouth Hawks beginning at 12 p.m. Quinnipiac will play 40 games this season consisting of four games against all 10 MAAC teams.
