HAMDEN, Conn. - An opening-day road trip to defending national champion Villanova highlights the Quinnipiac men's basketball team's 2018-19 non-conference schedule, which was released today by Head Coach Baker Dunleavy.
The non-conference schedule features 11 games, including five at home at the People's United Center, five away, and a neutral site game against Drexel (Dec. 16) at Mohegan Sun Arena as part of the Hall of Fame Showcase. The 11-game slate concludes on Dec. 22 with a home game against Stony Brook, before the Bobcats head into the MAAC schedule after the holiday break.
Quinnipiac's opening-day game at Villanova, which won its third national title in April, will take place on Saturday, Nov. 10 and will be a homecoming for Dunleavy (Villanova '06), who was the associate head coach for the Wildcats for their second national title in 2016. Dunleavy left Villanova after the 2016-17 season to accept his first head coaching job at Quinnipiac last year, when he helped the Bobcats reach the semifinals of the MAAC Tournament for the second time in their five seasons in the league. In his four seasons as the associate head coach at Villanova, Dunleavy helped the Wildcats compile a 129-17 record, including 63-9 in the BIG EAST Conference on their way to four straight regular season titles.
In addition to Dunleavy's connection to Villanova, Quinnipiac associate head coach Tom Pecora served for seven years as the associate head coach at Hofstra under current Villanova head coach Jay Wright. After helping Hofstra to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season in 2000-01, Wright left for the Villanova job where he has been ever since, and Pecora took over as the Hofstra head coach. Current director of basketball operations Ryan Harkins was also a graduate assistant and video coordinator at Villanova during the 2015-16 national title season.
After returning from Philadelphia, the Bobcats will host their home opener on Thursday, Nov. 15 against Hartford, tipping off at 7 p.m. at the People's United Center. Quinnipiac is 19-7 all-time in the series and 9-2 in the last 11 meetings, but the Hawks took last year's contest in Hartford 77-75, despite 27 points and 10 rebounds from Quinnipiac's Cameron Young, who will be back as a fifth-year graduate student after setting a school record at the Division I level for most points in a season last year with 622.
Quinnipiac heads to the road on Tuesday, Nov. 20 for a road contest at New Hampshire, a team it has not faced since the 2007-08 season. The Bobcats then return back home to face Maine on Sunday, Nov. 25 for a 2 p.m. contest, the second straight season that the Black Bears will visit (after Quinnipiac traveled to Orono back-to-back seasons). A year ago, Maine emerged victorious in Hamden despite a career-high tying 17 points from Andrew Robinson.
The Bobcats then play three straight games on the road, starting with a trip to Amherst to face the University of Massachusetts on Wednesday, Nov. 28. A year ago, Quinnipiac emerged with a hard-fought 68-66 win over the Minutemen in Hamden for Dunleavy's second win with the Bobcats. After a Dec. 1 road trip to Stony Brook for the first ever meeting between the schools, the Bobcats head to Dartmouth on Dec. 5 for a rematch of Dunleavy's first win as a head coach, a 78-77 opening-day thriller that featured 11 points and nine assists from Rich Kelly in his collegiate debut.
Quinnipiac returns home after the three-game road swing to meet Lafayette at the People's United Center on Saturday, Dec. 8. After a one-week break for finals, the Bobcats will meet Drexel at the Mohegan Sun Arena as part of the 2018 Hall of Fame Showcase on Sunday, Dec. 16. It'll be the third straight year that Quinnipiac and Drexel will meet, with the Dragons taking a 72-71 win in Philadelphia last year to spoil a 17-point effort from Abdulai Bundu.
Wednesday, Dec. 19 will feature a home doubleheader as the men's basketball team meets Bethune-Cookman for the first time, while the women's basketball team will entertain Richmond. The Bobcats will then conclude non-conference play with a home game against Stony Brook on Saturday, Dec. 22, completing a home-and-home series with the Seawolves.
The complete 2018-19 slate of games for the Quinnipiac men's basketball team will be unveiled when the MAAC releases the conference schedule next month.
