cher NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - Outfielder Andre Marrero and catcher Anthony Cruz earned selections to the 2018 New England Collegiate Baseball League All-Star Game, which will be held at MacKenzie Stadium in Holyoke, Mass. this Sunday at 5 p.m.
Marrero is currently hitting .293 for the Valley Blue Sox with five homers and 30 RBI, tying for fourth in the league in runs batted in, and was named the NECBL Player of the Week on July 2. Cruz, meanwhile, leads the Mystic Schooners with a .333 batting average in 12 games played.
Marrero and Cruz had key roles in a resurgent season for the Quinnipiac baseball team in 2018. Marrero batted .265 as the team's leadoff hitter with 17 doubles and 30 walks for a .363 on-base percentage. Cruz hit .270 with 15 RBI as part of Quinnipiac's catcher platoon, while also seeing action at second base.
The Bobcats were in first place in the MAAC nearly wire-to-wire this spring after jumping out to an 8-0 start, before finishing one-half game behind Monmouth on the final day of the regular season with a 16-8 record in conference games. Quinnipiac qualified for the MAAC Tournament after a two-year absence and was one of the last three teams left standing after rallying from a 6-3 deficit in the ninth to defeat Siena 7-6 in an elimination game.
Earlier this summer, infielder Ian Ostberg (Futures Collegiate Baseball League) and catcher Colton Bender (Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League) earned all-star honors in their summer leagues as well.
