HAMDEN, Conn. - The 2017 MAAC Champion Quinnipiac women's tennis team drew seventh-ranked Texas Tech in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on the weekend of May 12-13, it was announced today on the NCAA Selection Show.
Quinnipiac is making its fourth straight trip to the NCAA Tournament and its tenth overall. The Bobcats have won all four MAAC titles since joining the league in 2014, and have not lost a conference match in that time, going 38-0 overall (30-0 in conference, 8-0 in tournaments).
Senior Sydney Young (Austin, Texas) will be returning to her home state in her final NCAA Tournament (although four hours away from her hometown). It was Young who secured the bid for the Bobcats, winning a three-setter (6-3, 3-6, 6-3) at No. 4 singles in the 4-2 MAAC Championship win over Siena on Sunday.
Young, Kelsi Oliphant (Calgary, Alberta), Rachel Horton (Stamford, Conn.) and Sitilia Rencheli (Sarasota, Fla.) are part of a senior class that went 4-for-4 in conference titles and NCAA bids. The previous three years have seen the Bobcats face Miami (2016), North Carolina (2015) and Stanford (2014).
Sophomores Jennifer Lu (Cypress, Calif.) and Proyfon Lohaphaisan (Santa Clarita, Calif,), who each won singles matches in the MAAC Finals at No.2 and No. 6, respectively, will be making their second trip to the NCAA Tournament. Freshman Layla Rodriguez (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.), who won at No. 3 doubles with Lu and was up 4-1 in the third set at No. 5 singles in the MAAC Finals, will be making her first postseason appearance.
Texas Tech enters the NCAA Tournament with a 24-4 record after winning the Big 12 title with a 4-2 win over Oklahoma State. Two of the Red Raiders' four losses came to teams ranked No. 1 (Florida) and No. 2 (North Carolina) at the time of the matches, with the other two coming to No. 8 Auburn and No. 31 TCU. Denver and Southern California will be the other two teams making the trip to the Lubbock regional.
Match dates and times will be announced later, as well as ticket and live video streaming information.
