
Taryn Baumgardt, Angie King and Derek Smith Named To CoSIDA Academic All-District At-Large First Teams

Quinnipiac women's ice hockey senior Taryn Baumgardt (Innisfail, Alberta), field hockey senior Angie King (South Windsor, Connecticut) and men's ice hockey senior Derek Smith (Apple Valley, Minnesota) were named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District At-Large First Team, as announced by the organization on Thursday, May 11, 2017. The honor is the first for all three student-athletes, and as First Team honorees are now eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-American Team honors, which will be voted on by the CoSIDA membership and announced later this month.
King will graduate in a couple weeks with a 4.00 cumulative grade-point average in communications while Baumgardt has compiled a 3.94 GPA as a business major. Smith registered a 3.94 GPA in finance.
On the women's team, King and Baumgardt were two of 10 student-athletes named to the District 1 team which is comprised of NCAA Division I institutions in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont. To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution. Nominated athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games. Nominees in graduate school must have a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or better both as an undergrad and in grad school. On nominations are received, CoSIDA membership then vote on deserving candidates.
Baumgardt was an ECAC Hockey Third Team selection after logging six goals and 11 assists for 17 total points this season in 37 games while posting a team-best +20 plus-minus rating. Baumgardt and the Bobcats' defense gave up just 1.32 goals-per-game in 2016-17, which ranks No. 1 in ECAC Hockey and No. 2 nationally. With Baumgardt at the helm of the defensive core, Quinnipiac allowed just 18.18 shots on goal per game - which ranks No. 1 in the country. The Bobcats have also allowed just 618 total shots on net this year, which ranks No. 3 nationally. For her career, Baumgardt recorded 12 goals and 31 helpers for 43 career points. She played in 150 games for her career with the Bobcats - setting a new program record.
King was recently honored as the Quinnipiac Senior Female Scholar Athlete of the Year, which is bestowed upon the student-athlete with the highest grade-point average in their academic class, in each of her four years at Quinnipiac. In addition, King was also honored as a Zag Field Hockey/NFHCA Division I Scholars of Distinction. King was also earned Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-Mideast Region honors, All-BIG EAST honors and also won her second consecutive NCAA Statistical Championship after leading all Division I student-athletes in defensive saves.
Smith also received the Quinnipiac Senior Male Scholar Athlete of the Year, and also won the award for the fourth-straight year. Most notably, Smith became the first Quinnipiac men's ice hockey player to earn the prestigious ECAC Hockey Student Athlete of the Year award while also earning the program's academic award for the second-straight season. Smith was part of a senior class that has accumulated 102 career wins heading into the Bobcats' ECAC Hockey Championship Semifinal match-up on Mar. 17, 2017. Smith has played an integral part in the Bobcats' qualifying for three consecutive NCAA Tournaments and also led Quinnipiac to the 2016 NCAA Frozen Four and National Championship game. He is also part of a class that has won two ECAC Hockey Cleary Cups as well as the first Whitelaw Cup in program history. This season, he accumulated 11 assists in 31 games played to date. For his career, he has suited up for 139 games and has totaled five goals and 45 assists for 50 career points.
