NORTH HAVEN, Connecticut - Quinnipiac men's tennis fell to Wesleyan, 4-3, at the North Haven Health & Racquet Club on Saturday evening.
With the loss, the Bobcats move to 7-5, while the No. 10 nationally-ranked Division III Wesleyan Cardinals improve to 4-1.
Senior Kei Ezaka (Ojai, California) earned two victories on the day, which now gives him 134 wins for his career, which is second all-time in program history and three wins away from tying the program record of 137 wins held by John Hughes '10.
The day began with the No. 2 doubles match, where Axel Stern (Tustin, California) and Austin Yannone (Severna Park, Maryland) fell to Tiago Eusebio and Maxwell Smith, 6-4. The Bobcats bounced back in the No. 3 match, where Kyle Alper (Dix Hills, New York) and Ezaka teamed up to defeat Cameron Daniels and Steven Chen, 6-4. In the rubber match, Julian Rozenstein (Marlboro, New Jersey) and Patrick Cachapero (Loma Linda, California) defeated Michael Liu and Jake Roberts, 6-4, to secure the doubles point for Quinnipiac.
With Quinnipiac holding a 1-0 lead after doubles play, singles play ensued with the No.1 match where Ezaka swept Chen in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-0, to give the Bobcats a 2-0 lead.
However, Wesleyan would win the next four matches to claim the victory. Liu defeated Rozenstein in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-4, in the No. 2 doubles match. In the No. 3 match, Cachapero narrowly fell to Eusebio. Cachapero dropped the first set, 7-6 (7), but battled back to take the second set 7-5. However, Cachapero barely fell in the final set 6-4. In the No. 4 match, Stern lost to Joachim Samson in three sets, 6-1, 2-6 and 6-4. Alper then fell in the No. 5 match to Daniels in three sets. Daniels took the first set, 6-1, but Alper took the second, 7-6 (4). However, he could not maintain momentum and fell in the third set, 7-5.
Despite losing the match, the Bobcats closed on a positive note when Yannone took down Princeton Carter in three sets. Yannone dropped the first set, 5-7, but took the final two sets, 6-1 and 6-1.
