HAMDEN, Conn. - The defending MAAC champion Quinnipiac men's lacrosse team was picked to repeat as conference champions in 2017 by Inside Lacrosse, the magazine announced today on its website.
In addition to being picked first, four members of the Bobcats were named to the Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-MAAC team. Junior attack Brian Feldman (Canandaigua, N.Y.), sophomore midfielder Foster Cuomo (Oshawa, Ontario), junior face-off specialist Will Vitelli (Norwalk, Conn.) and junior long stick midfielder Adam Bellamy (St. Catherines, Ontario) were the four players chosen, tying Quinnipiac with Marist for the most players chosen.
The four selections were no surprise, as Feldman was a first-team All-MAAC selection a year ago after scoring a team-high 36 goals, while Cuomo was chosen to the second team in his rookie campaign after tallying 22 goals (11 of which came in the postseason) and 11 assists. Vitelli, who won the StringKing National Player of the Week honor from Inside Lacrosse after a perfect day on face-offs against Marist (19-for-19), was the MAAC Face-Off Specialist of the Year, while Bellamy earned the Long-Stick Midfielder of the Year Award from the league.
Quinnipiac finished the 2016 season with a 12-4 record, while reaching its first-ever NCAA Division I Tournament. The Bobcats earned their postseason ticket by going a perfect 6-0 in the MAAC during the regular season, then capturing the conference tournament with wins over Canisius in the semifinals and Marist in the finals. Quinnipiac drew in-state rival Hartford in an opening round NCAA Tournament game on its home field and came away with a 14-9 win to advance to the Round of 16. The Bobcats gave No. 1 Maryland a good battle before falling 13-6, ending their most successful season at the Division I level.
The Bobcats open the 2017 campaign with a road game against Brown on Sunday, Feb. 19, after the Bears reached the national semifinals a year ago. Quinnipiac's first home game is against Bellarmine on Saturday, Feb. 25, which will be played at Yale's Reese Stadium, the site of all of the Bobcat home games this season while the school completes construction of its new outdoor facility.
The official MAAC preseason poll and all-conference team, as chosen by the league's coaches, will be announced on Feb. 1 as part of the league's preseason awards show. To view the Inside Lacrosse MAAC Preview, go to the following link:
