HAMDEN, Connecticut – Quinnipiac women's outdoor track and field head coach Carolyn Martin has officially announced the Bobcats' 2016 schedule which opens this weekend at the Colonial Relays down in Williamsburg, Virginia. The Bobcats' outdoor campaign is a short two month season which features potentially 11 meets including the NCAA Championship in mid-June.
"We're excited about the season, we made some changes that I think will favor performances," Coach Martin said. "We're starting competition a week later this year and we did that for two reasons. First off, the weather was still really cold in that last week in March. We were traveling down to Virginia and still seeing snow flurries so that really wasn't a great way to get into the first meet. So we delayed the start of our season but still have the same amount of meets as we normally do. It also gave us an extra week to do some more training and make sure that our athletes were ready for the start of the outdoor season."
Quinnipiac opens at the Colonial Relays hosted by William and Mary in Virginia as the Bobcats will be competing against 59 other teams in the women's meet including 42 other NCAA Division I institutions. Niamh Ashe (East Islip, New York) led the Bobcat contingent a year ago as she was the only Bobcat to place in what is the second-most crowded field in a scored meet across the nation annually (second only to NCAA Championships). Ashe placed 8th in the 3000m event, leading the way for a group of three Bobcats who took down Top 10 results in the distance event.
A new wrinkle in this year's schedule comes throughout the middle of April as several new meets litter the Bobcats' 2016 campaign. Starting with the George Mason Springtime Invite, Quinnipiac will travel down for one day of competition on April 9 as this marks the first time the Bobcats have fielded runners in this meet.
The following weekend, another program-first appearance comes at the Long Beach Invite held in California from April 15-16. Last season, Quinnipiac made the trek out to the Golden State for the first time ever as the Bobcats competed in the Mt. Sac Relays and the Azuza Pacific Invitational. Shameal Samuels highlighted the Bobcats' performances, medaling with a fifth place finish in the 400m racing against competition from the likes of Duke, Central Florida, Colorado and Mississippi State amongst others. The Bobcats will travel with their eight ECAC qualifiers to compete for the first time in the Long Beach Invite.
The same weekend as the Long Beach Invite, the remaining Bobcats not making the trip out to California will compete for the first time at the Minute Men Invitational on April 16 while another new meet following on April 23 with the Wolfie Invitational (hosted by Stony Brook).
As the calendar hits the end of April, the Bobcats lead in towards their championship season as the Penn Relays is slated for April 28-30 while Senior Day is scheduled for Sunday, May 1 at the Yale Springtime Invitational.
A year after placing a program-best second in the 2015 MAAC Championships, Quinnipiac will look to continue the upward trajectory of their program at the 2016 MAAC Championships held from May 7-8 on the campus of Rider University. Chosen to finish second in the 2016 MAAC Preseason Coaches' Poll, the Bobcats are also coming off a program record second place result in the 2016 MAAC Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Both the New England Championships and ECAC Championships are held on the same weekend from May 13-15 as the Bobcats expect to be heavily represented at both major events.
The season reaches a culmination at the NCAA Championships, beginning with the Regionals from May 26-29 as the Bobcats look to have a repeat success as Samuels became just the second Bobcat in program history (first sprinter) to compete in the NCAA Regionals. Samuels went on to 47th in the 400m at the 2015 NCAA Regionals in Jacksonville, Florida and looks to make it back this season with potentially a few of her teammates.
The 2016 NCAA Championships are slated for June 11-12 out on the University of Oregon campus. The Bobcats have never had a competitor reach the national championship level.
