CHICAGO, Ill. - The Quinnipiac softball team jumped out to a three run lead against the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay on Sunday morning, but were unable to hold off the Phoenix in the final innings, falling by a score of 5-3. With the result, the Bobcats dropped to 1-3 on the year while Green Bay improved to 4-6.
Three Bobcats led the offense with multi-hit games against Green Bay. Junior catcher Dani Edmands (Northborough, Massachusetts) went 2-for-3 with two RBI's and a run scored while sophomore Maria Ascher (Little Canada, Minnesota) also went 2-for-3 adding a run scored and a double. Junior Keilani Finley (Alameda, California) finished the game with two hits in four at bats. Senior Sydney Robey (Glenmoore, Pennsylvania) got the start in the circle, pitching five innings and allowing two earned runs off five hits.
The Bobcats got off to a fast start against the Phoenix, scoring a run in the bottom of the first off three hits. With one out, freshman Sarah Heimbach (Greenwich, New York) got things going with an infield single and advanced to second on a base hit up the middle by Edmands. Robey then walked to load the bases for the Bobcats. Green Bay recorded the second out of the inning by throwing out Heimbach on a fielder's choice. Third baseman Miranda Magana (Santa Paula, California) stepped to the plate with runners on every base and smashed an RBI single to left field for the game's first run. The Phoenix were able to get the next batter out and leave the bases stranded.
In the second inning, Quinnipiac took a 3-0 lead off a walk and two hits. Senior Molly Jarrett (Northport, New York) led off the frame with a walk and reached third base on a double down the right field line by Ascher. Green Bay retired the next two Bobcats, but Edmands scored both runners with a single to right center for her second hit of the game.
After four scoreless innings by the Bobcat defense, the Phoenix finally crossed a run in the bottom of the fifth on a ground ball out. Green Bay was able to tie the score at 3-3 with two more runs in the sixth inning off a single through the right side with runners on second and third.
Quinnipiac threatened to score in the bottom of the sixth with back-to-back singles by Ascher and Abby Johnson (Chelmsford, Massachusetts), but the Bobcats left the bases loaded.
In the final inning, Green Bay took a 5-3 lead off three base hits. With runners on first and second, two wild pitches advanced both Phoenix into scoring position. The next batter then singled to left field to record the game winning RBI's.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Finley singled up the middle, but the next Bobcat popped up to end the game.
Quinnipiac finished the weekend at the Total Control Sports Invitational with a 1-3 record in Chicago. The Bobcats are back in action next week when they travel to Virginia for the Hampton Tournament. Quinnipiac will play five games in their second tournament of the year, starting with a matchup against the University of Buffalo on Friday, Feb. 26 at 9 a.m.
