Quinnipiac Sets MAAC Record with Fifth Straight ROW Award
EDISON, New Jersey – Aryn McClure (Springfield Gardens, New York) of the Quinnipiac women's basketball team continues her stellar freshman campaign as she picked up her fourth MAAC Rookie of the Week honor, as announced by the league office on Monday, February 15, 2016.
McClure's triumph secures that Quinnipiac will have the MAAC Rookie of the Week award winner for the fifth straight week, setting a new record in the conference. Iona held the mark previously as Joy Adams won the weekly rookie award four straight weeks on two different occasions during the 2012-13 season. The MAAC first officially announced weekly awards beginning in the 2007-08 season.
After winning back-to-back honors on Jan. 18 and 25 as well as one on Dec. 28, McClure has now secured the most rookie weekly award honors of any player in the MAAC this season. Siena's Jackie Benitez owns three rookie of the week awards while McClure's classmate Paula Strautmane (Mucenieki, Latvia) has compiled two weekly rookie honors.
McClure was the leading scorer and rebounder for all MAAC freshman this past week as she tallied 18 points and eight rebounds per game in helping lead the Bobcats to a 2-0 week. She rounded out her stat sheet with an average of 2.5 assists, 2.0 blocks and 1.0 steals in 32.5 minutes per game. McClure's 18 PPG average came on 61.5 percent shooting as she finished the week 16-of-26 from the floor.
Her highlight game of the week came in a heavyweight matchup on Friday as she outplayed Iona's Joy Adams on the way to a career and game high 22 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the floor to go along with nine rebounds, three assists, three blocks and one steal in 37 minutes of a thrilling 62-61 home win over the MAAC-leading Gaels. McClure's 22-point night stands as the most for a QU freshman in a single-game since Courtney Kaminski tallied 23 against Sacred Heart back on Feb. 27, 2007. Her defense on Adams also played a crucial role in the win as she held the nation's sixth-leading rebounder coming in to just seven rebounds and only one on the offensive glass. The seven boards stands as the fewest for Adams in a game against a MAAC opponent this season as well as her fewest since the second game of the season.
McClure then followed up that spectacular outing with a solid 14 points, seven rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal in a 65-53 win at Saint Peter's on Sunday. Her 14 points came on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor while she pumped in eight of her 14 points in the second half alone.
The weekly conference award is the seventh for the Bobcats this season – joining Brittany Martin's MAAC Rookie of the Week honor back on Nov. 16, 2015. The three different weekly rookie award winners easily stands as the most in the conference as no other MAAC school has more than one player to have won a rookie of the week award.
McClure and the Bobcats will be back in action on Thursday, Feb. 18 with a 5 PM tip-off at home against Player of the Year candidate Tori Jarosz and Marist.
