Bobcats Earn First Place Vote, 69 Total Points in Preseason Poll
HAMDEN, Connecticut – Just one year removed from the best season in program history, the Quinnipiac women's indoor track and field team has landed in second place in the MAAC Preseason Coaches' Poll, according to a vote of the league's head coaches. The second place selection in the poll marks two straight years the Bobcats have been chosen second while the No. 2 ranking is tied for the program's highest mark in the preseason poll. Quinnipiac finished the 2015-16 season with a program record second place finish at the MAAC Championships, headlined by a conference-leading seven event victories.
Traditional power Monmouth took first place in the poll with 79 points and seven-of-nine first place votes while the Bobcats claimed second with 69 points and one first place vote. That first place vote marks the first time in program history that Quinnipiac has received a first place vote in the preseason poll. Manhattan checks in at third in the poll with the lone remaining first place vote. Rider (56), Iona (46) and Saint Peter's (32) follow while Marist (29), Siena (18) and Canisius (14) complete the poll.
At the 2016 MAAC Championship, Monmouth totaled 205 points to win the title by a 72-point margin. Quinnipiac managed to claim second place with an impressive 133 points, setting a new program record for total points at a conference championship meet. Manhattan and Rider tied for third with 100 points apiece.
Even though the Bobcats fell short of Monmouth in the 2016 MAAC Championship, Quinnipiac put together an impressive seven total victories. Quinnipiac managed to capture nearly half the total individual events on the day (7-of-15) and scored three more than the next-closest tem Monmouth (four).
The most-recent triumph at the MAAC Championship continues an upward trajectory for the program as Quinnipiac has up from sixth (2014) to third (2015) and now to second place (2016) since joining the conference in 2013-14. The 133 total team points also represented a major jump-up as the Bobcats' previous program record at a conference championship (104.5 – 2015) was easily bested last season.
Carly Timpson (Narragansett, Rhode Island) made history for the Bobcats as the then-freshman earned Co-Most Outstanding Field Performer at the 2016 MAAC Championships, becoming the first Bobcat in program history to earn the award at the conference level. Timpson shined in her two signature events as she started the day with a mammoth 17.55m in the weight throw to take the individual victory. Heading into the day with a program record of 16.21m, the first weight thrower in Quinnipiac history set a new program record (+1.34m) while besting the second place finisher (16.00m) by a wide margin of 1.55m. She later added to her already impressive day with a second place showing in the high jump at 1.65m, becoming the highest finisher in the high jump at a conference championship in program history.
Two of the most exciting events of the day – the one mile and 3000m – both ended in dramatic individual victories for sophomore Kaleigh Roberts (Higganum, Connecticut). Roberts easily bested her previous personal best in both events (one mile: 4:50.06; 3000m: 9:58.88). The then- sophomore was very much in the discussion for Most Outstanding Track Performer thanks to her meteoric rise from her performances in the 2015 MAAC Championships (one mile: 4th, 5:06.08; 3000m: 3rd, 10:16.30).
Quinnipiac relied on their standout then-sophomore hurdler Jessica Lee and she came through with her first career MAAC individual title in the 60m hurdles, doing so in dominating fashion. After matching her personal best and leading the field with a time of 8.68 seconds in the preliminaries, Lee went on to tie a MAAC record with a time of 8.62 seconds in the 60m finals.
The Bobcats continued to dominate the distance events as then-sophomore Emily Wolff ran away with the victory in the 5000m as she clocked in at 17:07.84 to land her first career individual victory at the MAAC Championships.
Quinnipiac's season continued following the MAAC Championship with a solid 12th place showing at the New England Championships, highlighted by a gold medal performance from Lee in the 60m hurdles. Locked in a thrilling battle between three runners, Lee outkicked her competitors by less than 0.20 seconds as she claimed first place with a program record time of 8.61 seconds. Her triumph made her the first hurdler in program history to claim a New England title.
Lee went on to place fifth overall in the 200m at the New England Championships, giving her 14 total points for the Bobcats who finished with 20 for the two-day event. The 4x400m relay group (Marlo Wehrer, Nia Baker, Shameal Samuels, Kristen Ulrich) came through with a fourth place finish and the second-fastest time (3:48.67) in program history.
One final mark distinguishing 2015-16 as the best season in program history came in the ECAC Championships where the Bobcats compiled a program record eight points as a team across the two-day event. Wolff starred at the ECAC Championships as she managed to score a sixth place finish in the 5000m with a time of 16:45.65 that stood as a 22.49-second improvement on her previous career-best in the event. Samuels also capped her indoor career with a fifth place finish in the 400m, becoming the first Bobcats in program history to place in three straight ECAC Championships. Tracy Campbell also managed an eighth place finish in the one mile run to account for the record-setting eight point performance for the Bobcats.
Quinnipiac opens the 2016-17 season on Saturday, December 10 at the Yale Season Opener which begins competition at 9:00 AM from Coxe Cage in New Haven.
