HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac men's lacrosse team, which won the regular season and postseason MAAC titles a year ago, released its schedule for the 2017 season today.
The Bobcats will be playing their home games at Yale University this season, while the school completes construction of a new outdoor facility, which will become the program's new home for the 2018 campaign. The facility change will result in more night games for Quinnipiac this season, which will play four of its six home contests at 7 p.m. on Saturdays at Yale's Reese Stadium.
The 2017 schedule features one new addition this season is perennial power Princeton, which won six national titles between 1990 and 2001, including three in a row from 1996-98. The Bobcats will travel to Princeton to face the Tigers on Tuesday, March 7 in the fourth contest of the season.
The first three games on the 2017 slate are the same teams in the same order as last season, with Brown once again serving as the opening day foe on Sunday, Feb. 19 in Providence. The Bears reached the national semifinals last year, falling 15-14 in overtime to No. 1 Maryland, which also knocked off Quinnipiac in the Round of 16 by a 13-6 final. Brown defeated the Bobcats in Hamden last year on opening day 20-7, but Quinnipiac regrouped to record a 12-win season (12-4), including a perfect 8-0 against MAAC teams. Brown and Quinnipiac have met on opening day every year since 2011, with the Bobcats taking a 9-7 win in 2013.
Quinnipiac will play its first home game at Yale on Saturday, Feb. 25 against Bellarmine, which will start at 4 p.m. The Bobcats renewed its rivalry with Bellarmine, a former league foe in the ECAC and Great Midwest Conferences, last season in Kentucky, with Quinnipiac coming away with a 12-6 win.
The Bobcats will play the first of two straight road games in New Jersey on Saturday, March 4 against NJIT at 12 noon. A year ago, the Highlanders gave Quinnipiac a tough battle in Hamden, with the Bobcats prevailing late for a 9-7 win. NJIT will be entering its third year as a varsity program and have already shown some solid strides, giving both Quinnipiac and Marist (a 14-10 defeat) tougher challenges than expected last spring.
After facing Princeton on the road three days after NJIT, the Bobcats will get the chance to become more familiar with their temporary home field, playing three straight games at Reese Stadium, including two conference contests.
The homestand begins on Saturday, March 11 (7 p.m.) with a rematch against Hartford, which the Bobcats defeated twice last year, 11-10 in overtime on the road (on an overtime goal from graduated senior Connor Meth) and 14-9 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament at home (behind four goals from current sophomore Foster Cuomo). It was the first NCAA Tournament win for the Bobcats in their Division I history and the final game played on Quinnipiac's old turf field. The 14-9 win was also a bit of an anomaly in the series, which has routinely featured close battles. The last nine regular season meetings have all been decided by three goals or less, including six by one goal (four of which were in overtime).
A week later, Quinnipiac will begin MAAC play with a home contest against Monmouth on Saturday, March 18 at 7 p.m. The Hawks, who are entering their fourth varsity season, have quickly elevated their new program into MAAC contender status and return almost the entire roster, including a large senior class that were freshmen in the program's inaugural season. The Bobcats clinched the regular season MAAC title with a hard-fought 8-5 road win over Monmouth last year, behind four goals from graduated senior Ryan Keenan. The Bobcats also picked up an impressive 14-4 road win over MAAC rival Detroit Mercy in the snow, behind five goals from current junior Brian Feldman, and the Titans will visit the Bobcats this year for a Sunday matinee on March 26 at 11 a.m.
Quinnipiac's April schedule sees the Bobcats on the road for three of their four MAAC contests, starting with a 7 p.m. road game at Manhattan on Saturday, April 1. The Bobcats closed out their perfect MAAC regular season with a 10-3 home win over Manhattan last year, as current senior Jack Brust had nine saves while allowing only three goals.
Senior Day will then be early this year, as Quinnipiac plays its final home game on Saturday, April 8 at 7 p.m. against Marist in a rematch of last season's MAAC title game. The regular season meeting was a hard-fought 8-7 win in overtime that the Bobcats tied with three seconds left in regulation (on a goal from Keenan) and won with one second left in overtime on a goal from current junior Anthony Carchietta. That win essentially determined the regular season title and home field for the tournament, and teh Bobcats won the championship game at home 13-9 behind a career-high four goals from current senior Drew D'Antonio.
After a bye week, the Bobcats will close out the regular season with two road games, traveling to Siena on Friday, April 21 and then to Canisius on Friday, April 28. Quinnipiac defeated Siena 11-6 at home last season, and defeated Canisius twice at home, 17-9 in the regular season and 13-7 in the MAAC Semifinals. The top four finishers will qualify for the MAAC Tournament, which will be held on May 4-6 at the site of the No. 1 seed.
Quinnipiac will be looking to repeat the success of the 2016 team, which was the first Bobcat squad to go undefeated in regular season conference play since 2001 (also in the MAAC). The Bobcats postseason title earned the program its first-ever NCAA Tournament bid, while the 12-4 final record was the best Division I mark since the 2001 squad ended 14-2.
